What I liked

This internship challenged me like no other experience has before. It pushes you to get out of your comfort zone, not only through the work you have to put in each day in the classroom, but also through the friendships that you develop with the staff and other fellows in the program.

What I wish was different

Some parts of the program were a bit disorganized, such as their curriculum or the schedules for the students attending the program.

Advice

If you are someone who is unsure about being an educator, this program will give you a clear guideline of the job and responsibility you have awaiting for you in the future.

What I liked

I loved that I was able to provide a virtual school experience to students in more underprivileged areas for free through this program and teach really important and interesting content and skills through leading a class on Law. I also loved and and very grateful for the fact that I was able to receive daily coaching and feedback on my lessons, and that I was able to take that coaching and use it to better teach my classes.

What I wish was different

I only wish that I had gotten the opportunity to teach and work with my students in person. It was amazing to be able to get the experience of teaching in an entirely virtual setting, and I am glad that we were still able to do so and give these students something to do over the summer. However, it also would have been wonderful to be able to meet and teach these students outside of a computer screen as well.

Advice

If you plan on taking this internship and teaching at Generation Teach, I would highly recommend going through with it! It is an incredible experience that was extremely helpful for myself and my own personal growth and career, as well as for the students. Once you start teaching, I'd also just say to believe in yourself and keep pushing through! Sometimes you won't get everything right and it can be nerve-wracking teaching your own classes by yourself, but the reality is that in this program you're never alone. You get so much support, and everyone is focused on the growth mindset and helping not only students, but young teachers like you grow! So don't be afraid to reach out for help when you can, and don't be afraid to fail or make mistakes here and there! It's all part of the process and the important part is to be able to pick yourself back up, receive and process the feedback that you get, and work towards applying it and improving along the way!

What I liked

I really liked how well the virtual aspect worked. Originally, this would have been conducted in person, but due to COVID-19, it wasn’t. I also really enjoyed our students and teaching how to create an anti-racist society. These children are our future, so it’s best to share that with them as we equip them to make a better future.

What I wish was different

To be quite honest, I wish we had read a different text. These were 4th-5th graders and we were reading a high school level book. Thus, a lot of the important topics were either sped through or the understanding was lost on them. Additionally, I wish the training was longer. It felt really rushed. Lastly, I wish we had an outline of what a realistic lesson should look like. It just felt like we were thrown into it without know what we’re really doing.

Advice

Fully immerse yourself in the experience. It’s not really long, but it’s very rewarding, no matter the major.

Summer Teaching Fellow

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the community I found at this non-profit and getting to have tons of hands-on experience teaching middle school students.

What I wish was different

I taught during the summer of 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the internship was remote. I wish that I had a chance to do this internship in person, but of course, outside circumstances prevented this from happening safely.

Advice

I would tell students to apply and apply again. I was actually rejected from this internship when I first applied in 2019, but in 2020, I applied earlier and revised my essays and was accepted.

What I liked

I loved teaching middle school students and helping install a sense of confidence in them during a transitional period of their lives.

What I wish was different

I wish it didn't have to teach remotely this summer because I missed the in-person connection, but GT made it work really well!

Advice

I would encourage all majors to apply to this program, even if you don't plan on going into teaching it's a great opportunity!

What I liked

Teaching at GT was an incredible experience. Having the opportunity to work with youth from my home town and learn about social justice topics together was really unique. I loved the book we covered (Ibram X. Kendis Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism, and You) and really enjoyed discussing each chapter with my students!

What I wish was different

Due to Covid, the whole program was online. I wish I was able to meet my students in person and foster community building that way, but what could we do.

Advice

Always learn with your students. To be a successful teacher you have to be a fantastic student and you have to be open and willing to learn from those around you. Your students can and will teach you so much, they are historians, detectives, scientists, mathematicians, and they will change the world. It is your job to listen and empower them to use their voices to change the world and achieve any goals they set for themselves.

Summer Teaching Fellow

June - August 2019 • Providence, RI

What I liked

I liked the unrivaled teaching experience that I was able to achieve through this internship.

What I wish was different

I wished the level of disorganization within the internship, itself, had been different.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is that, this is a really great internship for anyone wanting to become a teacher and especially for those who are unsure if they want to become a teacher. The Summer Teaching Fellowship through Generation Teach provides its Fellows with unparalleled experience that is highly marketable on resumes.

What I liked

I like the opportunity to grow and teach my own classroom. The two weeks of training helped me learn how to manage classroom behavior. I learned a lot through this experience and go the opportunity for coaching. Every week I got to watch one of my lessons through a video recording and receive daily feedback. Additionally, I made a lot of connections with other schools through this experience that can help me with finding a job.

What I wish was different

I wish the salary had been higher.

Advice

This job is a good opportunity to determine whether teaching is right for you. It gives you the experience of being in a classroom with the support to help you through the program.

What I liked

The atmosphere and culture with the teachers, coaches, and students is amazing. Having a real chance to be in front of a class, in charge, on my own, with support when I need, was invaluable. The daily coaching and feedback with teacher coaches has helped me to grow more as a teacher than anywhere else.

What I wish was different

Having worked with Generation Teach the past 3 years, I've seen the organization grow and change over time. It is a difficult, but useful and rewarding job. The curriculum taught is ever-evolving and they always look for feedback at the end of each summer. The feedback that they receive is acted upon in following years. So anything I've wished would be different is likely being improved right now.

Advice

Come in with an open mind and an open heart and you'll make some of the best friends and have some of the best experiences possible.

What I liked

Being led by secondary education professionals and surrounded by an atmosphere of social justice and activism.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more access to career guidance and networking for after the internship ended.

Advice

I would tell anyone who may work as a teaching fellow in the future to stay positive and ask questions as much as you can! Also, don't forget to reflect on the things you're doing well, and not focus on the things that go wrong.

What I liked

The kids, the other fellows, and most of the staff were incredible people.

What I wish was different

I wish we had a bit more training focused on proper classroom discipline. Perhaps adding an extra week to the two weeks of training might have helped!

Advice

Read about classroom discipline and learn how to set things straight on the very first day, so your students know what the rules are. Rely on your other teaching fellows for support when times get tough.

What I liked

I loved my kids to death. Loved having the time to form these strong connections with my students. The experience was amazing and allowed me to cherish the relationships I had with each and every one of them. I felt my role as a teacher in their lives, as well as their role as a teacher in mine.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more experience working with trauma impacted youth and stressful situations in the classroom before going into the classroom. I had to learn a lot on my feet and very quickly to be successful.

Advice

It is far more important to be the teacher that likes all of her kids than the teacher that all the kids like.
