Collections Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Mumford, NY

What I liked

I loved that I had the ability to come in every day and choose what I wanted to do. Everyday was different and I was able to experience a lot of new things. I was also able to expand my network and get to know the museum staff at GCV&M. They were all very welcoming and friendly, I loved everyone I worked with!

What I wish was different

I wish I personally had more experience going into this internship. Not because they didn't prepare me to give me instruction, but because I would've been able to ask better and more questions.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help, even if it's from someone in the staff that you don't know well! They're all really knowledgeable about 19th century America and willing to share that information with you. Take up every opportunity to do something new, and trust me there will be lots of them! Also, it's not a bad idea to go to their all staff meetings. They let you know what's happening all over the museum and village!

What I liked

I loved everything about this. The people. The work. And the huge amount of skills that I could have never learned in the classroom.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more opportunities to help in costume for the special events.

Advice

Make sure to reach out and make contacts with your co-workers.
