Event Services Team

May 2018 • Newberg, OR

What I liked

I loved learning how to work in a team and developing a sense of resourcefulness and adaptability as I worked at setting up for various events around campus. I liked the diversity of work as well. While the majority of our work was centered around moving chairs and tables, we often had odd jobs that kept the summer interesting.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to work a few more hours, as I ended up not really working as much as I wanted to. I also wish that I personally had stepped into more of a leadership role earlier on.

Advice

Always seek to better your connection with your teammates. I didn't really do an excellent job at building connections with my fellow employees and it often caused some unnecessary tension that could have been averted had I done a better job connecting with them.

Electrical work study

May 2017 - August 2018 • Newberg, OR

What I liked

I was well respected by the electricians and trusted to make first contact with customers and deligate who would make the repair. Also got to work with my hands and with an assortment of power tools.

What I wish was different

Salary

Advice

If you want to be trusted you need to show up ready to work and have a good attitude about it. Also there’s no prior electrical experience needed so don’t let that hold you back, the electricians are a great bunch of guys and take the time to help you learn on the job.

Coordinator of Campus Recreation

May 2018 • Newberg, OR

What I liked

I got to prepare many of the details for our campus' Hadlock Student Center. I loved getting to be part of something that was developing, and learning new skills in a wide variety of fields that I can carry over to future jobs. Having a job that consistently expects a high degree of autonomy taught me a lot about problem solving and responsibility.

What I wish was different

I wish that my duties and schedule were more well defined. I love when what is expected of me is very clear, although the more I work, the more I realize this is a luxury.

Advice

Try working in fields that you don't know a whole lot about, or may be uncomfortable in at first. That is where the most learning will take place, and you will often develop transferable skills that you that you couldn't have pursued before!
