George Washington's Mount Vernon

Archaeologist Intern

June - July 2023 • Alexandria, VA

What I liked

The ability to be so hands on. I was able to create a research project from the collection and complete it in the course of the five weeks that I was there.

What I wish was different

Nothing that I wish was different. Excellent experience.

Advice

It is what you make it, the more effort that you put in the more you will learn.

Education Intern

May - August 2019 • Mount Vernon, VA

What I liked

The Mount Vernon Education Department team was phenomenal. I got to work with lead scholars from all over the country, and provide professional development to teachers from every grade level. I was trusted to independently work on both long term projects and the final stages of a major project for the summer. I loved everything about this internship.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been longer.

Advice

Never pass up an opportunity to network- you can make connections with people you've only known for a few hours by simply talking about shared research interests or career goals.

Archaeologist Intern

May - July 2019 • Mount Vernon, VA

What I liked

I loved getting to conduct my own research, help identify and catalog artifacts, and organize volunteers. I also really enjoyed the close-knit, personal setting of the office and the absolutely beautiful location with so much historical significance.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been a bit more structure or assistance with my research but I also understand that it is a small department with a lot of field work currently being completed.

Advice

I would say that an internship like this was really what you make of it. I was able to examine some really unique primary and secondary sources as well as getting guidance from the staff but most of that work came from my own initiative in seeking out things that I was interested in.
