Interesting work, great mentorship from full time consultants. Great way to get consulting experience before you apply for internships. Despite being an intern, I felt very much valued and part of a team.

Material Physics Research Experience for Undergraduates

What I liked

I was researching parasitic Giardia in a biophysics lab. I enjoyed the complexity of the project and the close interactions I had with my graduate student, post-doc, and principal investigators. Our cohort of other REU students quickly became a tight-knit community.

What I wish was different

I wish the experience were two weeks longer where these extra weeks were dedicated to writing part of a scientific manuscript.

Advice

This Material Physics REU program is phenomenal. Make sure that you do background research on the lab that you want to join, and don't be afraid to suggest your own experimental designs!

Research Assistant

What I liked

I learned a lot about a field that I was interested in and did not know much about: laboratory capacity in the global health arena.

What I wish was different

There was not a lot of direction and I was often the only one in the office working at the desk. I wish I had had more interaction with other interns and colleagues.

Advice

I learned how to manage my time and take initiative when I'm working on a project and don't have a lot of direction. If you need help, don't hesitate to ask your supervisor, especially when you're learning a lot at once about a new field like I was.
