Summer Adventure Guide

May - August 2021 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

I absolutely adored the outdoor environment and the staff at my site. I made the best of friends and everyone was constantly supporting each other as we would have to do some hard physical labor to keep the course up and running. Seeing new people walk up excited and ready, or even scared and nervous, was always something I looked forward to because I could either help a guest’s day be even better if they were already excited, or I could help someone overcome a fear. You never know what you’d get until the day of.

What I wish was different

If I could change something it would be the shifts. I love the long shifts, but I feel like when it’s not busy, there’s not much to do and look at. You can only really walk around for so long before you start getting extremely bored, especially by yourself.

Advice

With how supportive all the staff is, you don’t need to be nervous going into it. When I heard I would have to be climbing zip lines backwards in the mornings and doing all the physical labor, I got a tad nervous and thought I couldn’t do it. My staff pushed me and encouraged me through it, and I could’ve have been more happy with my decision to stay.

Course Instructor

May - August 2019 • Williamsburg, VA

What I liked

It was outdoors, the pay was good, got good hours and flexible scheduling. The job was enjoyable and everyday I got to go up and down ziplines and through ropes courses. There are not many jobs where you can say that. It also gave me lots of experience with customer service and public speaking.

What I wish was different

The heat. It got very hot during the summer and I wish I had the opportunity to work in the fall when it was cooler out.

Advice

Take advantage of being having the outdoors as your workplace, use bug spray, and stay hydrated!

Climbing instructor

April - August 2018 • Ashland, NE

What I liked

The job was a lot of fun and the training more so. I was able to really get to know the customers and got to spend my time climbing and helping others climb which I enjoy.

What I wish was different

Since we were a new site I wish we had better organization and leadership. Also, I wish our whole team had consistent training because we were all trained on different techniques We also did not get many breaks or lunches and we were working 12-14 hours in all black uniforms when it was around 100F.

Advice

It is a cool opportunity but be prepared to work like a mule. Most importantly you are in charge of the customer's safety, never do anything to endanger that.
