Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

Animal Curation Intern

May - August 2019 • McKinney, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed working with animals and the sanctuary. My favorite part of the internship was helping to start a new project tasked with mapping out various parts of the sanctuary from microhabitats to tracking box turtles. I was able to use a lot of the skills I learned at Tarleton and put them towards something that would have a lasting impact at the Heard.

What I wish was different

I needed a minimum number of hours for my internship to count for college credit. Working at the Heard isn’t shift based. You show up, do your job and you can leave when you’re done. The problem I had was that as I got better at doing my job, I also finished it sooner. I had to keep finding new ways to stay busy to get my minimum number of hours.

Advice

Be flexible and prepared to drop whatever you are doing at any given time. Everyone at the Heard has more than one job. Tarleton students have a good reputation at the Heard, and the Heard is always looking for more interns.
