Hennepin Healthcare

Rocksworld Summer Scholar- Intern

May - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved that I got to be at the hospital every day and getting to see a new part of the hospital. For the 10 weeks, I worked there, I got to explore 8 different specialities.

What I wish was different

I wish it was a bit longer.

Advice

If you are interested in healthcare, I would definitely recommend this. Apply to many internships as you can find that are interest to you and make sure to talk to people in the piper center.

Rockswold Health Scholar

May - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I strongly recommend Rockswold Health Scholars for anyone interested in health or medical research. I spent working hours in a hospital research lab which gave me a unique perspective of the behind the scenes work such as how blood samples are taken from patients and analyzed. The program also offers shadowing opportunities and weekly seminars from a variety of physicians and health providers, but I learned the most from my fellow peers. The program has you live with six other scholars, during which you listen to their unique experiences in the hospital and discuss how you can effectively and respectfully serve patients. Overall it helped me better understand the role of the physician in relation to both other healthcare providers and the patients themselves.

Rockswold Scholar and Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

Spending my summer at HCMC gave me vital insight in to not only what it is like to work in a research lab, but also the inner workings of a hospital. Not only was I able to gain research experience that was focused on the opioid epidemic and vaccine creation, but also had the opportunity to interact with various providers and shadow specialties or sectors of a hospital I may not have otherwise been able to. I personally grew a greater interest in public health, and can confidently say now that I want to pursue a career in medicine.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had more time at HCMC this summer. The Rockswold Scholars Program is 10 weeks long and I felt like I really hit my stride around week four. Having another two weeks would have allowed me to complete the experiment I began, and would have given me more time to shadow more physicians, nurses, and other providers.

Advice

Pitch your project ideas in the first week you are there. I waited until the middle of the second week which made it so I was unable to see my experiment through to completion. My second piece of advice is to be open to asking any and all questions to providers you talk to and shadow. This will not only show you are engaged, but can open new avenues for conversation and give you an even more well-rounded idea of what their day-to-day schedule is or how/why they chose healthcare.
