Hensel Phelps

Marketing and Project Development Intern

June 2022 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

At Hensel Phelps I always felt seen. At work, I knew that people cared about me as a person and wanted to develop my skills and keep me within the company. They always valued what I had to say even as just an intern. My supervisor gave me tasks that would challenge me and allow me to grow my skills and develop me as a professional. My supervisor always told me that even if at the end of my internship I decided I didn't want to work in the construction industry, she still wanted me to feel like my time was worthwhile and that I was able to gain skills I could put on my resume to help me get my next job. I always felt valued as an individual by everyone on the team, the company culture is unbeatable.

What I wish was different

There aren't many things I would critique about the job, from the pay/benefits to the diverse workload and company culture, I couldn't recommend Hensel Phelps enough.

Advice

I have been able to learn so much about the industry in such a short amount of time. I came into my internship knowing nothing about construction, so I have learned so much over the summer. This is such a cool job for someone who likes marketing and is business minded, but also wants to be creative. While I never expected I would be in the construction industry - and loving it so much - I am so glad that I found this job because I love marketing, sales, and writing and this internship has been the perfect mix of all three. My advice would be not to judge a job based on the industry, if I had done that I would have never found Hensel Phelps and had such an amazing experience. Take every interview you can get because my interview with Hensel Phelps was when I really knew I wanted to work there because I was able to see their company culture and knew I would fit right in.
