Direct Support Worker

February 2019 • Gates, NY

What I liked

This job for me is all about the relationships. Work for HCS if you love people, serving others, and leaving your shift feeling satisfied. There are endless opportunities to have positive and fulfilling interactions with the people you support as well as the coworkers beside whom you serve.

What I wish was different

I wish Direct Support workers were more recognized on a local, state, and federal scale. The hourly wage workers typically receive in no ways reflects the amount of hard work and dedication they bring to their job.

Advice

Be prepared to become passionate about your job, but at the same time be prepared to learn other coworkers may be a little burnt-out and exhausted mentally and physically. Do not let their exhaustion affect you. I know from personal experience that arriving to work with a positive mindset and readiness to work goes a long ways in bringing joy to not just the people you support but also the coworkers beside whom you work. Your shift is only as good as you are willing to make it. Bring your best self to the job and you will be rewarded.
