HHI Corporation

Labor Intern

September - December 2021 • Lancaster, CA

What I liked

This was the most fun and well-paying job I've ever had in my life, and I learned a lot about the construction process and management. I got the chance to apply basic estimates and learn about construction documents and how management really works on the jobsite.

What I wish was different

The project in California ended a bit sooner than expected, about 5-6 weeks early. I was able to continue my internship in Colorado Springs, which is where I learned more about the management aspect as I worked with the superintendent and management team there. The company also advertised that it would pay for housing, but that is only partially true, as they give you the 53$ an hour as housing compensation for when you live out of state. They may purchase your housing contract from home, but I don't know about that.

Advice

Definitely talk with the superintendents and management team and get to know them. Work hard with the labor, and be someone who does the work needed without excuses. This company has several BYU-I graduates, talk to them about classes they wished they took or paid more attention to. Be interested in the work!

BAF TIME INTERN

September - November 2021 • Edwards, CA

What I liked

It was my first internship experience, and I learned a lot and the pay was good.

What I wish was different

I would've searched for housing sooner. it would've been a good idea to contact some of the other interns and maybe try to do something with them for housing.

Advice

Even if you don't think you'll get the job/internship, apply for it anyway if you want it. Be positive and do your best.

Construction Estimator Intern

May - August 2021 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

HHI has a great company culture. From the start of the internship I was given responsibilities to help with projects and given opportunities to succeed. Asking questions was encouraged, so even though I didn't know what I was doing at the start, it didn't take long to figure it all out. Everyone was very willing to help and fun to work with. A great opportunity to learn more about the bidding process and the construction industry in general!

Advice

Be prepared to work hard. You'll be expected to contribute to HHI as a full member of the team you're working with, but you're not expected to know everything at first. Ask questions and you'll be fine.

Assistant Superintendent

April - October 2019 • Hill Air Force Base, UT

What I liked

it was a great opportunity to see several different facets of the construction industry including estimating, preconstruction and field experience. Working on Hill Air Force Base give me access to restricted areas on base that I was able to see a lot of really cool things.

What I wish was different

My internship formally ended at the end of August, and I still returned up for several weekends to assist with the project. However after August is been very difficult to communicate with my project manager. they gave me an offer to come back, but the lack of good follow up following the end of my formal internship has affected my opinion.

Advice

Get involved and work hard.
