Highland Lakes Camp

Assissant manager of Concessions

May - August 2019 • Spicewood, TX

What I liked

The camp focused on serving every guest with a genuine heart and help bring them to see the light of Christ. The community of the employees I worked with were delighted to be involved with each other so that no one is left out or when anyone would face any conflict they are not alone when they go through that experience. Even during the times of every individual worker's hardship, they would do their best to smile in front of the people they were taking care of.

What I wish was different

It is hard to do some of the tasks we had in the summer because we were short-staffed but they have changed the modifications of what camp will be like in the future for new recruits.

Advice

Sometimes when we (the employees) would confide in each other, about how our day was going and complain that what we were getting was not worth what we were receiving, reminded us what our reasons for going to work there in the first place. During the times when we had could no longer push ourselves because of our doubt and frustrated our co-workers were there to pick us up and pull us along. This experience has taught me much about the way community works between people and has shaped the way I now work with them. Going to camp here has been a life shaper and I recommend everyone to go here.

What I liked

I loved being able to serve the thousands of campers that came through the gates. I loved being able to help with alter call, sitting in on worship services, and the interactions with the campers.

Advice

This is not made for everyone. The hours are long. The job is hard. There isn't very much interaction with the campers in the Food Service team. It makes the job seem pointless. You need to be confident in your faith and confident that God is doing something, even if you can't see it. If you are looking for a way to grow your faith through service, this job is for you.

What I liked

I loved being able to love on the kids that came through the gates, allowing them to grow closer to Christ. Some of these kids have never heard of Jesus and seeing these kids lives be changed is something I will remember forever.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

Expect to be changed by the end of the summer.
