Quantitative Finance Intern

June 2021 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I liked the team and the fact that I got to work with the VP as an intern. I also got the opportunity to rotate between different roles and explore my interests in the field of financial reporting, data visualization, and project management.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship wasn't virtual and I could go visit the office and my team, especially the intern cohort.

Advice

My advice from this experience is to network as much as possible. Gain the maximum amount of exposure as you can and reach out to different people in the organization to build relationships which can go a long way.

Data Architect Intern

May - August 2021 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere Highmark had. Everyone was very welcoming and patient with me for asking so many questions.

What I wish was different

My internship was remote, so I wish I got to commute to Fifth Avenue Place to be in the Highmark building.

Advice

Working remotely is probably going to be the most popular option for doing internships now. So, I would suggest being patient and making the best of things as you go along to get eth most enjoyment.

Marketing Intern

May - June 2020 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I was really glad that Highmark was flexible with their interns given the challenging circumstances. They still offered us a thorough and informative project to work on instead of having us come to their office in the middle of a pandemic. They communicated very well and the entire experience truly worthwhile and rewarding.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have had the classic in-person intern experience but that is not Highmark's fault, so I'm really happy they still gave us a remote project.

Advice

Take as many good opportunities as possible that are offered to you. I had the option to not follow through with this internship given the pandemic environment, but I realized what a good opportunity I had and did not let the work-remote experience scare me away.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I loved the work environment at Highmark. I felt that my input was valued and my questions were always welcome, which is a huge deal because my goal was to learn as much as possible. In addition, I was very interested in the work I was doing on a daily basis. I was given work that full time employees would be doing and was able to take ownership of my projects.

What I wish was different

I really don't wish anything was different. There was never a day where I woke up and didn't want to go to work so I couldn't possibly ask for more.

Advice

My advice would be to focus on growth and not perfection. As an intern, you're not expected to know everything so it's best to just have an open mindset and do your best.

Employer Brand Intern

March 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

The culture at Highmark Health is truly remarkable. I have never worked with such highly motivated and inspirational coworkers and leaders. There are so many opportunities to pick up personal and professional mentors as well as job shadowing experiences during your internship. All project work that I completed was meaningful and impactful to the overall enterprise. As a bonus, we were allowed to dress business casual majority of my time there.

What I wish was different

A lot of networking opportunities took place after work hours. I took the bus into town and the last bus would always leave right after an event would start. More networking events during internship hours would be super helpful.

Advice

When working at Highmark Health, do not be afraid to reach out to leadership if you are interested in learning about different types of roles. They will allow you to shadow as many people as you'd like as long as it doesn't conflict too much with project work. Also take in as many projects as you can in your time being. While you may feel overwhelmed at times, the experience is worth it.
