Hill Air Force Base

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

My team at SkiCamp was the biggest highlight of the work. They were extremely supportive and guided me through a lot of things but let me perform on my own when it was time and I was capable. My supervisor at SkiCamp was probably one of my favorite people I met all summer and an absolute riot. I felt that I learned a lot and got a good taste of Software Engineering but more so, figuring out the type of work environment I want to be in and the types of people I want to work with.

What I wish was different

I did not like the main base department. I think there need to be some major changes to how things are run and they should all become much more like SkiCamp. I also think there needs to be far more accountability for management because at least to my observation, there were some major bureaucratic failings.

Advice

You are your own best advocate. If something's not right, it's up to you to make a fuss until it's right. If you wanna work somewhere, don't let people push you around, get in their faces and make it clear you're going there whether they help you or not.

Computer Science Intern

July - November 2021 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

Good team

What I wish was different

Better company culture

Advice

Say you want to be a PCIP rather than a PSP. PCIP's get a $1.5 /hr pay raise, and it merely comes done to whether or not you know to ask for PCIP.

Electrical Engineering Intern

August 2020 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

Really great team and cool projects.

What I wish was different

The initial training was long winded and broader than what I was doing.

Advice

Good place to work. If you can get through the low paying internship the wage after getting hired on is worth it. Make sure to ask about the PAQ program if you want them to cover a masters program.

Mechanical Engineer Intern

July - August 2020 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

The internship allowed us to see how the government truly works. We got to work with people from all over the country and listen to them give advice.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had had an actual project. The only assignments we had were busy work presentations that some didn't even have the opportunity to present. I also wish they would have structured the curriculum differently. We were working 8 hour days but the content was so repetitive I could have only attended the second day and had the knowledge of the entire experience. Additionally, their payments were completely disorganized.

Advice

Make sure that you are on an actual project and get close to your mentor. Your mentor will advocate for you and give your feedback to the places that need it.

What I liked

I was able to work in positions using high end data bases and work on projects that can benefit the organization I was with.

Project Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

There were a lot of interesting projects that I was able to be a part of that are very unique to working on a military base.

What I wish was different

The Air Force is a slow entity and I always wished things could move quicker.

Advice

If you can get a job with the Air Force, I would do it. The experience looks really good on a resume and some internships you get a security clearance with, which is very valuable in private industry even if you don't stay with the Air Force.

Electronics Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Layton, UT

What I liked

I got to shadow 3 different types of projects to see what I liked and didn't like. I learned a lot about what the workforce is like, I had plenty of help from people when I had questions, and people worked hard to give me the best experience I could have.

What I wish was different

I wish I had an internship that provided more Electrical Engineering experience. This one was software focused, and I didn't particularly enjoy my electrical engineer project I shadowed.

Advice

Inquire well about what you will be doing on the internship before you accept it.

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity that I had to work with professional software engineers on a large scale project. I had the opportunity to learn C# and my team was very sportive of my efforts. I felt that I made a meaningful impact on the project I was assigned.

What I wish was different

The on-boarding process was very slow. It took weeks before I could actually get access to a computer. I would like to see the process be more streamlined, especially for interns.

Advice

Don't be afraid to talk to people where you work, they are willing to help you when you have questions.
