Hofstra University

Resident Success Representative

September 2021 - May 2023 • Hempstead, NY

What I liked

I got to choose my hours and swap shifts when necessary. I rarely had problems that were difficult to deal with while working. The Student Coordinators were always very kind to me.

What I wish was different

There was no time off. If there was a break, I had to swap all of my shifts to one or two days that week so I could go home for a bit. Also, there was no way to stop a student from swiping their friend into the building except to yell and hope they listened.

Advice

This is a job that requires attentiveness, even more so now that they have changed the rules for students entering buildings.

File Clerk

July 2023 • Uniondale, NY

What I liked

I like how welcoming the people at the Hofstra Physical Plant were as well as having flexibility in my job without stress or pressure.

What I wish was different

There isn't really anything that I wish was different; maybe since I'm working at a physical plant, I could possibly gain knowledge and experience in engineering since that is my current major as a Hofstra student.

Advice

People will most likely be understanding of you if your circumstances are dire and are sincere. If that is not the case, you may be in the wrong place. Make sure to be respectful and diligent throughout your job, especially in the beginning as it gives a first great impression; do not slack of part-way through, however, as that could lead to burnout and giving up.

Research assistant

July - August 2018 • Hofstra University, NY

What I liked

I was fortunate to be mentored by a great engineer. Dr.Miranda taught me a lot and gave me various involved engineering tasks. I had the opportunity to master several computer programs such as Matlab, AutoCAD, Artemis Modal, and Mastan2 and learn more about the dynamics of structures. This experience was a great opportunity to prove myself as an engineer and made me want to conduct my own research.

What I wish was different

I wish that this research assistantship lasted longer as I could not finish the project by the end of the 10 weeks. However, I turned it into a senior thesis so that I can a chance to finish the research.

Advice

Don't be afraid of the workload, don't see a project as deliverables and deadlines; instead, let yourself be driven by the excitement of accomplishing it.

Virtual Academic Internship - Hofstra Veterans Venture Challenge

April - June 2020 • Hempstead, NY

What I liked

Flexible, self-learning, and simply wonderful! This internship gives students a chance to learn the rigors of marketing and what it really takes to have a successful startup! This internship is also great for students to get involved with networking and teamwork!

What I wish was different

This internship was very accessible in that students could do it virtually, however, it would be also nice if we had a few in-person events!

Advice

Ask questions! Marketing or getting involved with any internship can be overwhelming! This is a place to learn!
