Honeywell FM&T

Student Engineer II

May - July 2021 • Kansas City, MO

What I liked

I loved how many interns there were. There was never a shortage of new people to meet and get to know. Honeywell FM&T also put together lots of events for all the interns to participate in and to bond more. At the end of the summer, we were all really close.

What I wish was different

I know this isn't Honeywell directly, but I wish my security clearance could have gone through a lot faster. I ended up not getting my clearance until two days after my internship had ended. I was limited to doing unclassified work, which was still really fun and challenging, but I wish I could have had the ability to work on some classified material. That was my only drawback about the whole experience.

Advice

If you intern at Honeywell FM&T, then just know that you're at a great place. They have an amazing internship program and they actively go out of their way to make sure that every intern of the 80 something interns is having an amazing experience. My advice would be to talk to and get to know as many people as you can. They're are so many interesting and amazing people in this world, each with different experiences. I made it my goal for the first month to try to get to know as many of the interns as possible. I ended up making so many close friendships with people from all across the United States.

Student IT Intern III

May - August 2021 • Kansas City, MO

What I liked

The challenge presented to me when I began my internship felt appropriate as it was closely related to my field, yet gave me an opportunity to go outside my sphere of knowledge and learn new technologies. Everything we did on-site was a learning experience with cutting edge technologies, and allowed for huge networking opportunities amongst other employees and interns through the group activities and plant tours.

What I wish was different

The security clearance process took a little longer than I would have wanted, in retrospect it could have been initiated earlier.

Advice

Network, Network, Network. There are so many influential people and opportunities within the organization, that you really aren't receiving the full experience if you don't participate in the "extracurricular" activities while interning there. I have developed many friendships through the internship program that made my summer fly by, yet I still see after the internship.

Student Electrical Engineer II

June - August 2019 • Kansas City, MO

What I liked

The team that I collaborated with was very helpful and great about giving me real work to do that benefited the company and my education. The work life balance was very good as well. I truly enjoyed all the people that I worked with which kept me motivated. I got to make a lot of choices concerning my day to day, but this also meant that I needed to keep myself accountable. That made it enjoyable and worth my time and their time.

What I wish was different

I wish my manager would have been more forward with me on what I was doing well with and needed to improve on. I felt like I had to do a lot of digging and I still have no idea if he was proud of the work I did or not. My team members, however did give me great feedback. I also wish my manager had been more involved with not only myself but the team. The expectations for the summer were not immediately laid out, I had to figure them out through trial and error the whole summer.

Advice

Definitely go for it! The people were great. Just be sure to immediately ask your manager what all they expect of you. Talk about your schedule, coming to work, leaving work, and what your days will look like. Make sure you know what meetings you should be at and what meetings take priority over projects and if any will take priority over intern events. Go to intern events and learn as much as you can about the company and the culture. Get involved in a group outside of the interns if you can and DO NOT be afraid to ask questions. Get tours, advice, and generally acquainted with those outside of your team. Learn.

What I liked

Honeywell treats their interns like royalty! Housing was arranged, all 60 or so other interns were absolutely fantastic, and I was given meaningful work.

What I wish was different

Honestly not much.

Advice

If you have the opportunity to do this internship, I would certainly go for it. Treat the summer like a job interview, as there is a really solid chance you're being considered for a return offer
