College Orientation Leader

May - August 2020 • Terre Haute, IN

What I liked

Being able to grow as an individual and the focus that was made for us as leaders to develop and think about our skills and who we are as leaders. It was also a great experience to be able to connect with the students we worked with and to be able to help their college process

What I wish was different

Training As well as the job was multiple hours everyday on Zoom which tended to be mentally exhausting, and contact from students would come at all hours of the day so sometimes it felt like the job never ended

Advice

Take the chance to try for this job because it’s a great opportunity to develop your skills as a leader that you might not get again. Learn to make a balance for your life so you can have time for yourself while also helping your students to the best of your ability.

Undergraduate Researcher

May - August 2019 • Terre Haute, IN

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to do research in my degree field as an undergrad. It allowed me to begin immersing myself in my future field of study. While I have an advisor there to help me though the obstacles.

What I wish was different

10 weeks is how long the program runs. That is not much time to start and finish a research project. I wish the program was longer.

Advice

For anyone going into a research science I would recommend asking your professors to see if they are SURE advisors. If they are you should try and get involved with one of their research projects. It was help you understand the proper steps needed for completing research projects in your field.

Biology Research Intern Under PhD student

May - July 2019 • Portales, NM

What I liked

I loved the chance to work under a graduate student, to learn what happens in the field work of Biology and get that perspective outside of a classroom as well as getting volunteer hours while learning. This was something that I knew would either make or brake my next step in figuring out what I wanted to do with furthering my career/education. And I feel in love with the field work part of biology research.

What I wish was different

I had an amazing experience at the South West Research Station, I was able to meet many knowledgeable and respected biology researchers as well get to see the beautiful state of Arizona/New Mexico boarder and the biodiversity included as well. In saying this, I wish that I would have been able to stay longer, but I plan on fixing that by going back this upcoming summer to continue my internship!

Advice

My advice I would give to others about not only my experience, but all experiences that you take in life would be that the more you put in, the more you will get out. So take every opportunity, such as the research that I done in Arizona and run with it. Always be polite and leave your peers and your teachers with something positive to remember you by. Kindness, honesty, and hard work can go a long way.
