J.B. Hunt Transport

Operations Manager Intern

March - June 2023 • Portland, OR

What I liked

The job itself was fun to learn the ins and outs of daily Operations. I loved the camaraderie I had with all the other Managers, especially my boss the Regional Manager. Before this I knew nothing of trucking, hauling loads, or even planning. This was very beneficial.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been placed at a different location with more responsibilities sooner. I moved to a different location at the end of my internship and there I learned quite a bit. I learned a lot from the first location I reported to, and that made it possible to learn the new software the company was putting in place, but that was most of my focus there. Also, I wish I had more classes in finance.

Advice

You are welcomed in as a part of the team right away, and all the Managers are amazing to work with. If you're interested in learning the logistics side of Supply Chain, this is the company to learn from. Also, it wouldn't hurt to focus on Finance also, because that will take you further.

Operations Management Intern

May - August 2023 • Knoxville, TN

What I liked

I enjoyed learning the dispatching and route planning process for the daily deliveries. The culture of the company is something else that I enjoyed being a part of, the relationships that I developed during my internship is unforgettable.

What I wish was different

The project was largely left up to the intern, which was slightly difficult to start up, but turned out to be great through the mentorship that I received.

Advice

Make sure that you are decisive as well as technology oriented.

Application Development Intern

June - August 2022 • Fayetteville, AR

What I liked

I enjoyed the people-first culture as well as the chance to work with industry-leading technologies. J.B. Hunt is trying to become a technology company which makes the experience go beyond typical tech internships. The internship is definitely a fun experience where you get to learn a lot, meet cool people, and grow as a developer.

What I wish was different

I thought the program was great! The only thing I would change would to make the project I worked on more interesting.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Engineering and Technology Intern

May - August 2022 • Lowell, AR

What I liked

- I loved that they hired all Industrial Engineers and they gave you a great understanding of all the different opportunities we could do as an IE - I was given my own project that I worked on from scratch. I was able to iterate through and create a forecasting model that I presented to Sales Executives. It was a very rewarding project and has been implemented into the company’s forecasting method. - I had the opportunity to cross-train with different sectors of the company to learn more about what they do and the company as a whole. - Created a whole cohort of interns where we had weekly events and got to know the rotational engineers so we were adapted to the company easier. - I was given a mentor, an engineer who is just a year or two older, to help you through the on-boarding process.

What I wish was different

- I wish I had known more about the company before I went there.

Advice

- this is a great opportunity to learn about a company that provides an Industrial Engineer any opportunity all over a company!

Graphic Design Intern

May 2021 • Lowell, AR

What I liked

I really liked how flexible they can work with me while I do the internship in college. I also like that I actually feel responsible for the jobs I do because I feel like I am being counted when a graphic is needed.

What I wish was different

I wish remote communication is a little better. Sometimes I’d be waiting prolonged periods for a reply, but only because the designers can be busy.

Advice

It’s so important that you can use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign efficiently, and being able to make graphics fast to succeed in this job. Sometimes there are deadlines so tight that you cannot afford to learn the programs without already being proficient in the Creative Suite.

What I wish was different

Advice

It was okay for me to feel like I did not know what I was doing going into the summer because my coworkers helped teach me what to do and introduce me to new languages and software.

Communications Intern

May 2018 • Lowell, AR

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to grow my experience in the marketing department at J.B. Hunt. My boss was very welcoming and I gained valuable skills in writing and editing in this position. In addition, J.B. Hunt has great opportunity for growth. I got offered a raise and new position within the company after only 5 months.

What I wish was different

I wish that I got to write more in this position. It was a communications position, but I found myself doing more financial work and processing a lot of invoices.

Advice

Be happy where you are at! Even if you are processing invoices for the marketing department, know that it will benefit you as a well-rounded employee. I got to learn the not-so-fun parts of my major and that is an important life skill!

Applications Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Lowell, AR

What I liked

The company had an amazing atmosphere, and was employing a lot of new and current management techniques, so I felt like I certainly got experience working in an Agile environment. I also got to meet some great new contacts and be part of a company that is leading the transportation industry.

What I wish was different

There wasn't very much room for my group to work in because the company is hiring lots of new engineering and technology people. My manager was also a new recruit, so she didn't always know what we needed to do or how to do it. I wish they had put us on a team with a senior who knew the ins and outs of the company better, but overall she did a great job for how short of a time she had been there.

Advice

Certainly get familiar with the Agile framework and Scrum methodology because they're being used in lots of companies now including JB Hunt and Walmart. Also get used to checking your email and using Skype, because I used 3 different messaging apps on a daily basis, aside from having daily meetings with my manager and other teams. Communication is key in large businesses like JB Hunt.
