Summer Camp Counselor

June - July 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Getting to work with campers at a sleep away camp is a unique opportunity, the campers adapt to it like a home away from home and love the staff like family. I loved being able to teach them new things like rock climbing and archery and help them discover new interests and also watch them develop friendships among their peers that will last a lifetime.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more staff this year, being understaffed adds stress to the counselors and administrative staff and gives us less time and energy to interact with the campers in meaningful ways.

Advice

Being a camp counselor is a huge responsibility but because of that it helps you to gain skills such as leadership, and to understand the value of working as a team toward a goal. It is so rewarding to see the campers so sad to leave us at the end of camp, and already so excited to come back next year. Working with children helps me to look at the world the way I used to when I was young, to see all the possibilities and wonder around me.
