Marketing - Customer Product Support

May - August 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

I have always loved John Deere products, but never realized how great of a company they are. Deere is very good at being personable with all employees no matter their background. Each person in the company is important, and plays a role in the big picture. Deere does great at making employees the priority which helps to breed a culture of amazing customer service. I also loved how Deere takes interest in personal development, they have many opportunities to help you learn and grow. Finally, the people at Deere are what makes the company what it is.

What I wish was different

The only down side, is that the only jobs are in the mid-west.

Advice

I would recommend if you have any desire to work for Deere, to apply to an internship! If you don't think you would even be considered, give it a shot anyways and do your best to try getting in there.

Quality Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Des Moines, IA

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere and culture there, and I was trusted with large projects to work on. My mentor helped me every step of the way.

What I wish was different

Not a lot of development for chemical engineers, but I just accepted a full time job offer in the paint and chemical coatings department which will be more my speed.

Advice

Take every opportunity you get, especially after getting the job. Job shadow even if no one tells you too, take courses the company offers even if it's not required, etc. That's how you get a return offer.

Test Engineer

May - July 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

I appreciated how willing my coworkers were to help me out. Everyone did their job, but also helped each other so everyone could succeed. They had lots of training sessions where I could learn new skills to help me be a better employee.

What I wish was different

I would have like more hands on work. Because there is a Union, I was not able to physically set up and conduct the entire test, nor was I able to fabricate the parts I needed myself. They had to be made by someone else. This is very useful, but as someone who likes building and working with my hands, I found this quite irritating.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions. People want you to succeed and are more than willing to help you with whatever you are struggling with.

Product Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

I was given the ability to work on something that is going to be seen on a prototype of a tractor, as well as do it the way I wanted. The intern program was amazing and my mangers and supervisors were great.

What I wish was different

I wish that our laptops and software we needed would have been ready by the first day or at least a week. We waited about 1-2 weeks, some longer, to receive the software necessary to do our jobs.

Advice

Go apply and have a great experience! The interview questions were mainly behavioral.

Manufacturing Programmer Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

The opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the real world manufacturing setting.

What I wish was different

Even though I wasn't a huge fan of programming I don't wish anything would have been different. This opportunity taught me that it is something I don't want to do when I am full time.

Advice

It takes time to learn, at times it can be frustrating but understand an internship is short and it's difficult to get to perfection in that time.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

I interned this summer as an Order Fulfillment Process Assembly Manufacturing Engineer. I provided engineering support to the assembly operations of the 8R Row Crop Tractor e23 PowerShift transmission. In this role, I was responsible for managing and delivering assembly process layout changes, integrating tooling for a new product, supporting a limited production build, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives, all to improve and maintain the quality, safety, delivery, and efficiency of John Deere’s processes and products. While interning at John Deere, I also had the opportunity to attend an intern conference with over 500 other interns, network with peers and superiors, organize and participate in volunteer events, complete numerous trainings, do 3 job shadows, and interview 15 people in various functional areas. This has been one of the best summers of my life, mainly due to the incredible experiences I had not only at work this summer, but also due to the 110+ other interns that Deere brought to the Waterloo area. Deere knows how to recruit awesome people – the folks I met this summer were some of the most amazing, friendly, and accepting people I’ve ever met. I loved the work culture at Deere, and, more generally, I enjoyed the mix of technical work and people management work that a manufacturing engineering role contains. I like that manufacturing engineering, in my experience, allows for a healthy mix of office and shop floor work.

What I wish was different

Nothing, really. My experience at John Deere was excellent. I truly wouldn't change anything.

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity to learn and experience different areas of a company while you're interning there. As an intern with more lenient work requirements than a full-time employee, you often have the freedom to explore the company and interview people in roles that you think you might enjoy.

Weld Manufacturing Engineer

April - August 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

I couldn't have asked for a better manager or coworkers, and I loved the work we were doing. Deere is also really good about giving all of their interns opportunities to see different parts of the company and planning activities so that we could enjoy our summer.

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed more opportunities to shadow other weld engineers in different positions.

Advice

Starting out in a new position can be intimidating at times but I think it's important to still express opinions and ideas. If you don't understand why things are done a certain way don't be afraid to ask why or even suggest better ways to do it. The reason some companies like John Deere are always hiring new talent is for people to bring new ideas to the table.

Product Development Intern

May - August 2017 • Moline, IL

What I liked

I liked the commitment the company has in its interns. Many resources are allocated to further develop employees including interns. Aside from the great work experience, they put together many events for interns to do after work.

What I wish was different

I wish I got to work with more interns throughout the whole summer.

Advice

Take advantage of as many classes through JDO as possible, never hurts to have knowledge on multiple different platforms across the company.

Data Analytics Intern

January - September 2018 • Champaign, IL

What I liked

This opportunity allowed me to experience Champaign during the summer. I got to work in a laid-back team environment that allowed me to build strong relationships with my coworkers.

What I wish was different

The projects that we worked on at John Deere were more long term which meant that I would be spending numerous months on each project and if it was something that I did not immediately like there would not be anything I could do about it.

Advice

Go into any internship with an open mind and most importantly focus on building relationships and building your network because ultimately thats what will help you get your next internship and ultimately a job some day.

IT Analyst

June 2018 • Moline, IL

What I liked

It had a very important team setting. The Team setting is vital for the departments success. I liked how welcoming and knowledgeable and helpful all my colleges were. It was a difficult job to try and absorb all at one time but it was an interesting experience being able to contact different people all across the world and work with others to solve whatever issue was at hand.

What I wish was different

I'm not sure if I would change my experience. It was an experience where I had no background knowledge and I'm not sure if there was anything I could have done to better prepare. It was learning on the fly and that was fun, there were always new challenges that popped up and there's always different ways of trying to solve it.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions ever, the more you can learn the better.

Future Development

May - August 2018 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

The people there were wonderful to work with. They were patient and always willing to help out if you did not know how to do something or were stuck on a problem. The test bays were top of the line, and they gave me a project that is beneficial to the company.

What I wish was different

I spent a lot of time on the computer doing design work. I am not a big fan of siting at a desk all day, so I would have liked something where I could move around more and be outside.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask for help or clarification. The other engineers want you to succeed and they are happy to help a young guy or gal out.

Product Design Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Silvis, IL

What I liked

Getting the chance to do design work that interested me and traveling to Louisiana for a project.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would change about my internship would be for it to be longer!

Advice

When you land an internship, don't be afraid to ask coworkers for help when you're doing tasks you've never done. Also, have fun with it and add your own personal flair to your projects to make it stand out.
