Student Nurse Extern

May 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

Johns Hopkins is a teaching hospital, I learned a lot during the summer that was extremely beneficial for nursing school. I worked on an outpatient oncology unit, so whenever we would learn about cancer in class I could make connections to real like scenarios.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I absolutely love my job and how flexible they are with my school schedule. Other jobs that I've had weren't as flexible and with nursing courses being so rigorous you really need free time to take a breather and this job did just that for me.

Advice

I would say if you're in nursing school, find a student nurse position. This is because they know you're still in school and try to give you hours that work best for you. In addition to this, you learn so much because it's relevant to the field you're in. Initially when I got placed on an oncology unit, I was a bit scared and didn't think it would be for me. After working here, I became so passionate about oncology and plan to work with cancer patients after graduation. So another piece of advice would be to be open minded about jobs because you never know until you try!

Biology Laboratory Assistant

June 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

I loved being able to assist my PostDoc with hands on procedures and learning about his projects. I loved spending time at the animal research facility working with mice and learning more about molecular neuro psychiatry. The readings assigned were also very interesting and I learned so much over the summer.

What I wish was different

The amount of work given varied from time to time and a more consistent workload could’ve been better.

Advice

Be ready to work on long protocols and work diligently. Some days I would come in at 7am and leave late around 12am midnight. While this is not necessary, many lab protocols involving live tissue can take many hours and it is worth it to go through the entire protocol.

Certified Nurse Extern

June 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

Getting experience in the field you wish to work in, I believe is critical to see if you actually like it. As a nursing student, I do get clinical experience during the school year however this opportunity has shown me this is the field I want to work in. I was nervous since I never had a nursing job before, but the staff were nice and took the time to teach me nursing skills.

What I wish was different

Advice

Before starting nursing school, I had already decided I wanted to go into pediatrics before even working in the field. This opportunity allowed me to experience pediatric nursing and now I for sure know this is the field I want to work in the future. I recommend while in nursing school to get more nursing experience by getting an internship or job. It shows initiative and can help give you an edge once you graduate.
