Support Staff

September 2020 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I love my coworkers, my direct supervisors, and the work I do feels meaningful

What I wish was different

above my direct supervisors, the management is very unsympathetic to employees’ COVID concerns

Advice

A supervisor in a different department told me not to hesitate to advocate for myself when it comes to Covid stuff.

Program Assistant

June - August 2019 • Troy, MI

What I liked

Working with kids, learning on the job, amazing and passionate coworkers, helping campers become better humans,

What I wish was different

Leadership across camp was not always great, sexism, hiring better people for more challenging kids, less . gossip.

Advice

Children are amazing regardless of their mental or cognitive abilities, they just want to have fun and feel loved. It is up to the worker to see that and work for the greater good of the campers!

Intern

May - August 2013 • Warren, MI

What I liked

It was my first experience working within a real office and learning everything that comes with that.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more driven. I wish I realized that this would be a good opportunity to be like a sponge, taking in everything that I can in order to learn as much as possible and grow.

Advice

Ask many, many questions to the people working the positions. Be confident and try to learn as much as you can.

Development Intern

April - July 2017 • Royal Oak, MI

What I liked

The events planning aspect of the job was unique and consistently changing, it provided a lot of variety and opportunities to try new things and meet new people. I enjoyed working for a cause that you could feel good getting behind.

What I wish was different

Organization was lacking. As a nonprofit organization, there is a lot of disorganization and failure to plan appropriately and this was difficult at times.

Advice

Let your director know exactly what you hope to get out the experience as well. You are not just there to assist them, but to learn something to help prepare you for your life in the future. Tell your director what you want to do and where you want to end up so they can assign you projects that help you reach your goals.
