Koch Industries, Inc.

Operations Transformation Generative AI Specialist

May 2023 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

Firstly, the culture at Koch is truly unique. The Principle Based Management™ approach is at the core of the company's culture and it greatly influenced the way I made decisions and interacted with my colleagues. The eight foundational values of the company culture resonated with me and I found myself reflecting on what they meant to me personally. I also appreciated the resources available to better understand Koch culture, such as the PBM SharePoint site and the MBM Go! course. In terms of projects, I had the opportunity to work on some exciting AI initiatives. Although the specifics of these projects are confidential, I can share that they involved innovative applications of AI technology and required a deep understanding of data analysis and machine learning. These projects were challenging but also incredibly rewarding, and I learned a lot from them. One of the highlights of my internship was participating in the Innovation Challenge. This was a competition where teams of interns were tasked with coming up with innovative solutions to business problems. My team and I worked hard on our project, applying the DMF and other PBM concepts throughout our journey. The experience of presenting our idea at the Final Presentation Expo was unforgettable. Overall, my internship at Koch was a great learning experience. I enjoyed the culture, the projects I worked on, and the people I worked with. I'm grateful for the opportunity and look forward to applying what I've learned in my future career.

What I wish was different

I wish I spent less time researching in the beginning of the internship and more time developing.

Advice

I would recommend just embracing the experience. Use the work experience to expand your network and personal connections. Nothing is stronger then people working together.

What I liked

One of the opportunities of joining the program is that there is a summer internship challenge. In this challenge, you are paired with interns with your company and expected to come up with an innovate solution for a problem in Koch Industries. There are potential rewards for placing high among your peers.

What I wish was different

That I had more work as an IT intern. With long projects, interns are not given enough work to do unless they are in Koch Business Solutions. Not for sure how this could be improved.

Advice

Shadow all across Koch if you have the time at this internship. The college recruiters are excellent at helping place people in roles they want to do after their internship if they show enough reasons to support their move.

What I liked

Koch Industries, INVISTA specifically, allowed me to work on exactly what my full-time teammates were working on. They taught me first about the business and industry, and then worked into specifics of reporting and monthly tasks. I got real world experience and also got to visit a manufacturing plant to learn the ins and outs of the company's manufacturing process that I was accounting for. As an intern class, there were numerous events that we could attend to meet other interns at the company which was very helpful in not only socializing with those we were working with, but also expanding our network to learn on topics we were not as familiar.

Always take the opportunity to learn and grow your knowledge. The industry is constantly changing and if you have the chance to be apart of this innovative society, you absolutely should. Learning multiple different backgrounds of softwares is important in not only furthering your knowledge but also by making you more competitive in the work force.

Automation Specialist Intern

What I liked

I liked that I was expected to create value for the company and do "real work." At the same time, my supervisor was able to give me grace and understand that I may not know everything right off the bat. I was empowered in my role by the company and leadership providing me with the tools to be successful. It was an excellent first internship that I would recommend to anyone.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been more confident going into the internship. There was a lot of internal uncertainty when I first came in to the role; I was unsure I would be able to meet the expectations they had set for me because I had no prior corporate experience. After I started working on projects, this feeling went away and I started to fully enjoy my internship.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something. Everyone is very willing to be a resource to you if you need a process or program explained in further detail. Leadership wants interns to be able to "connect the dots" to understand how and why the business processes work.
