Study Manager

April - September 2021 • Kenilworth, NJ

What I liked

The corporate culture. The flexibility of work. Detailed and explanatory training. Feedback from supervisors. Networking with other interns.

What I wish was different

My role was entirely remote and while this was convenient in its own way, I still would have preferred to build connections face-to-face.

Advice

Facilities Management Intern

What I liked

Facility Start-Up Intern

May - August 2020 • Durham, NC

What I liked

I enjoyed having an internship in something that I've generally spent my college career studying for. It was really interesting seeing how a pharmaceutical company works to operate in such a large scale which is not something that we focus on in school. In addition, I loved the level of project work that came in teams; they really value doing regular meetings, check-ins, to make sure that you are on track and get the help you need in order to finish your task.

What I wish was different

Though the site was at Durham, NC, our internships were all actually remote and we never really got to go into the site. It would've been easier to do a lot of this, almost all things, if it was in person. Whether that me the project, connecting with Merck employers (managers and other interns) , getting a return offer, etc.

Advice

Be open to making mistakes and learning. You are not expected to know everything jumping into an internship. Employers understand that and they make sure you know what you need to in order to succeed. People you work with will be very welcoming, at least at Merck they were, and are willing to talk to you if you need to do that.

Pharmaceutical Sciences

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Merck is an awesome company that worked hard to ensure that all virtual internships were productive and engaging. The pharmaceutical sciences organization is stock full of brilliant and dedicated scientists who invest in their interns.

What I wish was different

Obviously a virtual internship was not ideal, but Merck adapted their program to the virtual format well.

Advice

Network! Interns should not shy away from any and all opportunities to network while in industry.

Packaging Technology Co-op

June 2020 • West Point, PA

What I liked

I love the culture Merck has. Although I’m an intern, I’ve gotten opportunities on big projects and learned so much. The team I’m currently in have been so helpful and kind. It’s always a good time working here as a co-op.

What I wish was different

My co-op was remote so I wish I could meet everyone in person and see the site. Do more things hands on.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and reach out when you have questions on your project. It’s better to ask, learn, and understand the process rather than getting it wrong and it becoming a struggle.

Social Media Intern

May - August 2020 • Upper Gwynedd, PA

What I liked

Amazing manager and team; they all genuinely wanted to see me grow.

What I wish was different

Fun opportunities to meet and connect with other interns since we were remote for the Summer. We had lunches together, but I wish there'd been virtual happy hours or game nights together; many of us felt disconnected to some degree.

Advice

Reach out and set up calls with as many people as possible! If you have free time, use that to set up a call with someone in the company you admire. Take advantage of the company directory and LinkedIn. Doing this actually helped me land a higher-paid return offer.
