UX/UI and Software Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

I loved working with a small company. The entire company met together 1-2 times a week, and I got to hear from the marketing, design, and engineering sides of the company. I also got to weigh in on all of these things and ask questions. The best part was seeing my contributions really make a difference in the company. I was able to create a new feature that is currently front and center on the application and is used in different places throughout the app. While this was very challenging, it was rewarding to know that I was truly helping the company advance and I was learning faster than I have ever learned anything in my life.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been a set amount of hours. During the summer, I was also working at a camp full-time while trying to do the internship. Since I was unpaid, they allowed me to set my own hours and work when I could. While the flexibility was awesome, it also left me feeling like I was supposed to use all of my free time on the internship. I knew I needed to rest, but I also felt like I could not put in enough time if I did decide to rest.

Advice

If you are going into an internship where they allow you to make your own hours, establish a minimum and a maximum amount of hours for yourself then talk about this with your employer and make sure you are on the same page. This will allow you to rest without feeling like you are not doing enough.
