Researcher

June - August 2021 • Binghamton, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the environment and the opportunity to be in the same facilities as a Nobel Prize winner.

What I wish was different

It was a little difficult working with a research team that had high standards, but overall it was good.

Advice

I would definitely study a bit about the field you're going into and try to review some of the techniques they implement to reduce the time spent struggling

What I wish was different

I wish more time could’ve been dedicated to my internship I worked another job at the time and it became a little complex to balance both.

Advice

It is important to follow directions and learn as much as you can during your experiences. There are some wonderful opewrtunities out there but it is up to you to make the most out of them.

Research Intern

January - December 2019 • Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo

What I liked

This internship has been incredible! I was afforded the opportunity to work side-by-side with international students and faculty, as well as a diverse group of domestic students and faculty. I deeply appreciated the hospitality of Minera Boleo for hosting us and allowing us to gain real experience in the mining industry. This internship has given me incredible research and career experience, not to mention the networking connections I have made as a result.

What I wish was different

This NSF funded research experience has been absolutely wonderful, and to be honest, I don't have any major critiques. Dr. Tina Niemi ran the program seamlessly, I always felt prepared and in-the-know. If I ever had a question, Dr. Niemi (or any of the participating faculty), was prompt and thorough in response and genuinely took care to make sure that we were in sync. From international travel to living on an active copper mine for a month, I can't express enough how excellent communication between students and faculty ensued.

Advice

Go for it! Any student pursuing a career path in Geology should absolutely apply. This experience has been incredible for me personally, and I think that anyone participating has walked away with invaluable experience and connections.

Advice

Definitely apply to places that are out of your comfort zone. Going to Texas for the summer was a big step, but the experience was well worth the risk.
