Product Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Burnsville, MN

What I liked

Amazing company to work with---did meaningful work and was allowed to contribute just like any other employee. The building included a cafeteria, a gym, and a massage therapist and was very dedicated to the theory that a balanced worklife leads to the most innovative and successful ideas. I liked working with creative individuals with professions I'd never seen in action before: graphic designers, copywriters, engineers, industrial designers, online retail analysts, information technology, quality assurance representatives... And the company is international, so I got experience collaborating with people who didn't have English as their first language.

What I wish was different

The role of Product Manager, it turns out, deals primarily with documents. I wish I could have been the copywriter for our marketing material or the industrial designer who works on product design, because I felt unsatisfied working with spreadsheets and managing numbers rather than people. This experience helped me understand that without a more social connection, I perceive my work to lack variety.

Advice

QBP is the most amazing company I have ever worked for. The interns were a tight-knit group who were allowed to do real, relevant work and partake in the company culture. My advice is to enter a position and learn one thing in particular about yourself: go into the experience and learn whether it is the company and its culture that contribute most to your job satisfaction, or if it is the work itself that you perform that fulfills you. I found out that, even if the culture is wonderful, I need to have a daily job that allows me to engage not only with the data and our product, but with the wonderful people I work alongside, too. I loved the people, so if I returned to QBP I would look for a position that allowed me to collaborate with them more, rather than manage them.
