Adult Basic Education Instructor

June - August 2018 • Rockaway Beach, NY

What I liked

I was able to teach a underserve population and help prepare them for their GED. This allowed me to apply the skills I gained at Binghamton University to give back to my community through education.

What I wish was different

To have more time. It was very difficult to plan a course with only 12 weeks to cram a lot of information.

Advice

Develop your adaptive skills because in a work environment, things are always changing and its your responsibility to adjust to those change to produce the best quality product. For me, because my class was so polarized--some students were at a high school level, while others were at a middle school level--I had to always tailor my course to fit both population.

What I liked

Flexible hours, simple tasks.

What I wish was different

Getting a promotion based on knowledge of tasks.

Advice

Just follow the instruction booklet and everything will be fine. The tasks are not difficult so long as you remember the steps. If you forgot how to do a task, don't hesitate to ask.
