Radio Flyer

Brand Ambassador Intern

May - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I loved the company culture. The people that work here are truly some for the best people I've ever met. I felt so welcomed from the moment that I arrived at Radio Flyer. I also think that the work life balance is very reasonable and I truly enjoyed what they had me working on.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more structure because there were times where I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do next.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would give to somebody based off of my experience is to build connections with people outside of your department because this gives you a better understanding of how the company operates. I would also tell people to ask lots of questions because that how you get better.

IT Programmer

June 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I enjoy the culture a lot. People are there to lift you up on your strengths, and also to help you improve in areas you want to as well. There is a balance of casual fun and professionalism integrated into the workplace, and overall I feel everyone is easy to approach and work with. The internship is organized with social events and classes that are designed to help you learn more about yourself and others, and the projects I worked on felt like they had an impact on the business. Just a couple projects you do there could save them over 100 hours annually, potentially! It's clear people care for you and want to see you grow.

What I wish was different

More inter-department collaboration would have been nice. I mostly meet with my manager, who is wonderful and communicative (even when out of office), who lets me know what other teams need, but more direct contact with them would have been nice.

Advice

Go to social events and ask people to have lunch with you. Everyone is truly friendly and, if you ask them, will really find time and go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The whole atmosphere of radio flyer was phenomenal. When I first came into radio flyer, I saw their values and what they pride themselves as a company with their products. All of the employees were friendly and helpful to pointing me into the right direction on how to complete my goals. I spent majority of my time with the operation team in the warehouse and helped with transfers, dealing with RMAs (return merchandise authorization), and many other projects.

What I wish was different

The one thing I wish was different is to stay longer. I got to spend a good amount of time here, but I wish I could stay longer and work on more projects with different departments.

Advice

The one advice I would give is to take notes and enjoy the moment because when you start your journey at radio flyer it will go by faster than you think.

Brand Ambassador Intern

May 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

This program was great for professional and personal growth. It is great to see the transparency and willingness to help everyone reach their goals. It sometimes blows my mind how I have never heard any Flyer complain about their job. The employees here genuinely love what they do and that contributes to a great environment. There is so many team building and bonding activities that are always a great way to make new connections. As for my position, I love being able to represent the brand and its values at different test ride events around the Midwest. For background, Radio Flyer recently within the past five years released new innovative eBike. My role for the summer was to organize events for individuals to test out the bikes to build awareness of the new Flyer line. It was really cool to be able to collaborate with a great team and contribute new ideas to make the process better.

What I wish was different

I wish this internship was longer! I love it here at Radio Flyer and I do not want to leave.

Advice

No idea is a bad idea. Come everyday with plenty of ideas and be willing to share. Everyone here is very willing to help and listen at Radio Flyer. All feedback and comments are greatly appreciated at every level.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I was very pleased with the importance of the projects I was given, and the agency they let me have in completing them. I always had projects to work on, where my fellow interns in other departments were sometimes left with open space. I also loved the opportunities for overlap and collaboration between departments. I wasn't always doing cut-and-dried mechanical engineering work; I could tailor my projects based on my interests. The company culture is also fantastic. The intern program itself is filled with enrichment activities, and the full-time employees go out of their way to include you.

What I wish was different

The start dates for the interns were staggered over a month or so, which made the schedule of intern events a little odd. I wish we had all started within the same few weeks, to better bond and plan events. Also, I think that they have great intentions when it comes to DIB. It was clear that they are more intentional about creating an inclusive community than many workplaces out there. Moving forward, I think they could stand to back it up with small and substantial contributions (catering food for the Pride social from a LGBTQ+ vendor, for example, or making the options for the paid Juneteenth volunteering centered around Black communities).

Advice

The intern community is fantastic, if you're committed to participating in it. Live with other interns and hang out outside of work, and you will have a stellar, social summer! Also, live as close as you can to the office. Going downtown is better on the weekends, anyways.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I really enjoy working with all the people at Radio Flyer. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. I also appreciate the very involved and hands-on nature of the work I do at Radio Flyer. I have plenty of opportunities to work in the prototype shop, and that is definitely one of my favorite parts of this job.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities to work with people in different departments. For my role, I expected more interdepartmental collaboration, but I ended up working by myself most of the time. I also wish my workload was more predictable, it varied drastically day to day.

Advice

One piece of advice I have for any future interns at Radio Flyer is to be open to feedback. Radio Flyer has a strong culture of feedback, so becoming comfortable both giving and receiving feedback is really important. Overall, feedback is a great way to learn and grow, and embracing it can be helpful in both your personal and professional development.

E-bike engineering Intern

March - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

This job gave me the unique opportunity to wear many different hats on a product development team. I found it extremely liberating and encouraging to have such a high level of collaboration with multiple parts of the company. This company also knows how to highlight all the great things that can come from working for a smaller company. Furthermore, this company deals in a market that is uniquely focused on having fun and seeing my work contributing towards a product that has the potential to bring a happiness into someone's life is priceless.

What I wish was different

I wish my time here had been longer. I have never worked somewhere that I have been at for 5 months and it feels like it has been only 5 weeks.

Advice

This job gives people the opportunity to grow as a person within this job. Even if you are just a temporary employee, Radio Flyer gives numerous career improvement activities to help grow your personal development goals. My advice to anyone interested in this job would be to take full advantage of these learning opportunities which will benefit you in the future.

Industrial Design Intern

June - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I really like the people and the environment at Radio Flyer. I love my team (industrial design). My manager is a great communicator and a listener who is fantastic at giving feedback. The design team is small and we move very fast so I was able to jump from sketching to prototyping on a couple of projects during my internship. Overall, it is a great place to learn about technical skills but also people skills.

What I wish was different

I wish they have an office close to where I go to school.

Advice

It is truly one of a kind experience at RF. The HR team often hosts fun and educational events for the interns and other full time employees to build relationship with one another. RF really sticks with their values and embodies them within their culture.

Accounting and Finance Intern

May - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I loved the people and friendly environment that Radio Flyer provided me and all of the other interns. From my short time at Radio Flyer I have grown tremendously in both a professional and personal standpoint. An example of this has been through my development of accounting skills. The accounting team at Radio Flyer has made it extremely easy for me to adapt to this new work environment and has also provided me with a safe space to ask questions and learn.

What I wish was different

One thing I would do different is getting to work with other teams in the company. Although internships are meant to help you learn about your future career that you are perusing I feel that getting to work with other teams such as the sales team or the operations team would give interns the opportunity to find new possible interests within other departments.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about my experience at Radio Flyer would be to not be afraid to reach out or spark up a conversation with someone new you see around the office. Coming into this internship I was very nervous because it was my first internship, but I quickly learned that everyone at Radio Flyer wants to help and wants to see you be successful.

Sales & E-Commerce Intern

June 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Lots of opportunities to try different aspects of the sales & e-commerce job. Radio Flyer's culture is second to none and everyone here makes you feel incredibly welcome. It is clear that Radio Flyer is working to have positive impact on the world, which makes working here that much better.

What I wish was different

While the work is still engaging, my role is more of a desk-oriented job compared to other internship positions. This is not necessarily a negative though, as this style of work still provides plenty of room for growth and overall engagement. There are still hands-on projects, they are just less frequent than in the other fields of work going on at Radio Flyer.

Advice

I really believe that Radio Flyer is one of the most fun company's to work for, so enjoy and make the most of it while you're here!

eBike test ride event and quality assurance intern

May - August 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The company is an extremely great place to work because of the company culture that has been built. All of my coworkers are invested in my success and development both professionally and personally. There are clear goals and outcomes that I am striving to achieve with help every step of the way. I like how it is an environment that allows me to make an impact on the company with everything i do. They do a great job of showing what impact I am making on the company.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have gotten to work with more areas in the business. My role already allows me to work with the quality assurance team, the brand communications team, and occasionally the product development team. I wish I would've asked to sit in on other teams' meetings to better understand the full scope of the company.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share to someone who would be an intern here is to leverage the opportunity of getting to know the leaders at this company. The leadership at Radio Flyer is excellent at what they do, and they are even better at guiding young professionals to make smart and effective decisions for their futures.

Brand Ambassador

November 2020 - March 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The atmosphere within Radio Flyer company would have to be the main pro. Though I had a virtual internship, my coworkers (Flyers) were very welcoming. I felt connected and needed as soon as I joined the company. I received assistance from 5+ flyers throughout my training who were willing to guide me along the way. Getting a personal LinkedIn message from the CWO ( Chief Wagon Officer) welcoming me to the company made me feel like an essential part of the team. I learned a lot over my internship time that can be useful to me forever.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to see the Radio Flyer office to get that grasp of the company. I am aware of the conditions of COVID and understand why I was not able to come into the actual workplace.

Advice

There is a lot of student/employee lead work, meaning you have to be responsible enough to meet those deadlines and goals. Find ways to be creative and push the vision of Radio Flyer in everything you do.

Sales Analyst Intern

May 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Radio Flyer invests so much of their time and resources into the intern program. As an intern, I grew so much personally and professionally through my work and the WagonU courses I participated in over the summer. The work I completed was directly impactful to the business, and the company culture is unmatched. Everyone at Radio Flyer embodies the company's vision, mission, and values. Everything I learned was relevant to where I saw my career progressing, and this was definitely the best internship I've ever had.

What I wish was different

I wish the office was more accessible by public transportation, but the drive isn't terrible and definitely worth it for the experience I've had.

Advice

Be ready to work hard! Radio Flyer sets high expectations for their interns, so I enjoyed being pushed to perform at my best. Also, be open to feedback (and feedforward). Radio Flyer places a large emphasis on continuous feedback and improvement.

HR Intern

May - August 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The amazing workplace culture is unlike any other organization. People want to support and develop you, it’s incredible! You actually do meaningful work where you can see the direct impact on the business. The work can be challenging, but definitely one of the most rewarding experiences.

What I wish was different

The commute was a bit difficult for me due to office location, but there really isn’t much that can be done about that!

Advice

Bring your authentic self and become a sponge to absorb all the learning you can. Since there are ample amount of opportunities for growth, ask questions, reach out, and don’t be afraid to speak up and share ideas! Challenge yourself to really lean into everything and be open, that’s how you can really get the most of this incredible experience.

Prototype Shop Intern

May - August 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

This internship was seriously the internship of my dreams. I have been a part of 3 other intern programs and this one tops them all! I loved the culture within the company and I love how much the company trusted the interns with serious and meaningful tasks.

What I wish was different

I only wish that the company was closer to the city so that there would be more housing options. Other than that it was amazing!

Advice

Be as outgoing as possible. The city is filled with so many great people, events, and adventures, and it's all up to you to experience it all while working for a Radio Flyer. My recommendation for applying to any position at Radio Flyer is to make sure you have a very solid portfolio, and show them what you can do.

Design Research Intern

May 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Radio Flyer is fun. I glided through the office on a scooter, bonded during monthly company socials, and explored all over Chicago with the best intern cohort ever. Radio Flyer is fulfilling. From testing toys with children to e-bikes with entire families, I felt so connected to end users. Radio Flyer is diverse and inclusive. The outside of the building lights up rainbow for Pride Month, and inside you'll find the team putting on events and trainings to help everyone continue to learn and to build a sense of belonging. Best internship ever!

What I wish was different

I honestly wouldn't change a thing. Radio Flyer surpassed my expectations.

Advice

Jump right in and get involved. The summer will fly by and there's not a moment to waste! Connect with your fellow interns to try all sorts of fun things in Chicago. I highly recommend visiting the many street festivals throughout the summer, renting Divvy bikes to go to the beach, and planning a day trip out to Starved Rock state park to get your nature-fix!

What I liked

The welcoming work environment made me so excited to come into work every morning. Radio Flyer did such a great job at pairing each intern with a manager that matched their abilities very well. I felt like an important part of Radio Flyer and the projects I worked on spoke to that. Radio Flyer offers a top notch internship opportunity that really encourages all their interns to reach their full potential through events, perks, and pay.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to be who you are and go out of your way to ask as many questions as possible. I have never been in such an honest environment and I feel like I am a better person coming out of this summer.

Industrial Design Intern

May - August 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

When you're an intern at Radio Flyer, you're working on real projects that have an impact on the company. Being able to throw myself into Product Development and work alongside Flyers that have been here for so long not only allows you to get a feel of what the field will be like, but also gives you a front row seat to a plethora of other departments, which shows you how your role impacts the others. Because Radio Flyer is such a small company, you get to experience the full breath of design, taking projects everywhere from design research to concept development to prototyping and final CAD development.

What I wish was different

The location is hard to get to without a car but it's worth the minor inconvenience.

Advice

An internship at Radio Flyer is high paced and rigorous, but extremely rewarding. If you have the chance to work here for the summer (or longer) - take it!
