Rhode Island Department of Health

Public Health Scholar

June - August 2019 • Providence, RI

What I liked

I like how friendly the staff is at RIDOH, and how willing everyone is to make sure the Scholars are involved in both their assigned projects and aspects outside of that. I was able to attend meetings with my supervisor for groups and programs that I wasn’t interning for which was a great way for me to learn more about the other programs in the health department. I was provided numerous opportunities to be involved in the state work, and helped with several activities run by my program throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish that I knew about this opportunity sooner, so that I could explore my interests in the Public Health field further. RIDOH does offer the opportunity to do an internship during any college semester, including the summer and winter, and allows you to extend your internship if you choose to do so.

Advice

I encourage you to do an internship if you have the time and opportunity. They are a great way to learn more about the field you are interested in, and can help you decide if that is something you would like to do in the future as a job or career. If you aren’t sure what you are interested in or where to intern, talk to other students about their past experience or with your professors/advisors about possible places to look at!

Public Health Scholar

What I liked

I learned a lot about how the Department of Health worked internally as well as the other sectors with the department. We had weekly meetings (Public Health 101) which was focused on different careers within Public Health. I also liked that I got to work side by side other professionals. I feel like I grew professionally with this internship.

What I wish was different

I wish I got more responsibilities and projects to work on.

Advice

Apply for programs that might not be of immediate interest to you, you may be surprised!
