Ringle

English Tutor

January 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I love tutoring with Ringle! When I first started tutoring, I was drawn to the flexible hours and being able to meet and talk to people around the world with different experiences and perspectives. After I became a tutor, it was everything I imagined and more! Ringle provides lesson plans with questions so tutors don't have to worry about those. On weeks I had more free time, I'd open many lessons and help many students with English. There was no better way to spend my mornings than talking to a senior in my field or another college student. On weeks I was busy, I loved that I could take time for myself since scheduling was all up to me. On top of everything - the great tutoring platform with the materials provided by Ringle, and the easy-to-navigate documentation - the pay is also solid. It's really the perfect side hustle!

What I wish was different

I wish Ringle would stop by New York. I wasn't a tutor yet the last time they visited and I'm really sad to have missed the opportunity to meet the team in person.

Advice

Take the mock session seriously because it is almost exactly like a real lesson! It's a great first try and practice for when you become a tutor.

What I liked

Working for Ringle as an English tutor allows me to create an extremely flexible schedule while making enough money to support myself as a student. The hourly rate in addition to the bonuses is incredibly encouraging, in addition to the lack of a minimum-hour requirement. If I'm extremely busy with finals, I can choose not to work for a few weeks, and if my schedule is empty, I can work as many hours as I want. As a student who lives very far from their university, it is also especially helpful that I can work successfully in any location and time zone. I have never found a job that is more reliable and rewarding job than Ringle, so I highly encourage any student who is mildly interested, to apply.

Private Tutor

What I liked

I really like the autonomy provided to tutors based on Ringle's structure. Tutors have the flexibility to determine their own hours, work location, preferred lesson length, and who they would like to work with to some extent. I also found the connections I built with those I regularly tutored to be extremely meaningful and rewarding.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was a little more leniency regarding the cancellation policy. Unfortunately, sometimes things come up after the 24-hour strike-free cancellation window, which can make tutors feel stuck.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share would be to complete feedback reviews directly following each corresponding lesson. This sometimes may be difficult to do especially if scheduled lessons are back to back, however it can prevent the overwhelming feeling of having multiple reviews piled up due the next day. Doing the feedback reviews right away also makes it easier to pull information from the lesson while it is still fresh in your mind!

What I liked

I have loved working at Ringle so far! I started as a tutor earlier this summer, and loved the flexibility it offered to its tutors, as well as all of the wonderful connections I have made with the Ringle staff, other tutors, and students. The pay is great for any college student looking for a side gig, and the flexibility allows you to truly make the most of it. I also was offered a position as an Outreach Intern for my university during the Fall 2021 semester, during which I recruited new tutors to the platform. So, not only is Ringle a great place to work, but it is also full of other opportunities waiting to be seized.

What I wish was different

I have had next to no complaints so far, but I wish the orientation was a bit more comprehensive. For someone who did not have tutoring or teaching experience before starting Ringle, the first few lessons were certainly nerve-wracking, at least leading up to them. However, once I got into the swing of things, it was much more comfortable.

Advice

The students are probably more nervous for each lesson than you will ever be because they're the ones learning another language! Be welcoming and encouraging, and you'll love your time with Ringle.

Tutor

February 2021 • Seoul, South Korea

What I liked

What I like most about Ringle is the flexibility. I've yet to find a single job other than Ringle that lets you set your schedule on a weekly basis -- one week I can work 40 hours, the next only two. It's also very easy to earn bonuses and have access to other opportunities and positions with the company, such as content creator or campus ambassador. I'm currently taking a break from tutoring due to school, but it's amazing to know that at any time I could come back to it and begin working immediately!

What I wish was different

The starting pay is not the highest, relative to other tutoring jobs that recruit Ivy League students, but you can quickly ascend the pay scale and make very good money.

Advice

The flexibility is unparalleled!

What I liked

Ringle has been a dream job for me as a college student. It offers completely flexible hours, which allows me to balance tutoring with my school work and extracurricular activites. The pay is great, and the work is not very labor-intensive but it is very rewarding. I've enjoyed every lesson I've taught and it's a pleasure to meet and connect with so many interesting people in a variety of different professional fields.

What I wish was different

It would be nice if every student had a profile, so you could get some insight into them as a learner before each lesson, but it's really not a big deal! It's super easy to adapt as you go.

Advice

Being friendly, kind, and supportive makes lessons easier for you and your student! It's totally okay to talk and laugh with your students while still providing corrections on their English. Students are much more likely to open up and converse more freely if they feel comfortable!

What I liked

I really appreciated that Ringle allows me both flexibility with my time and genuine enjoyment for the work I'm doing on a daily basis! Because the tutoring structure is determined solely around how many hours I indicate I am free to pick up lessons in a given day or week, I was able to adjust my tutoring around other commitments in my schedule. I was also able to mingle and meet Korean working professionals, sometimes quite advanced in their careers, across a huge swath of industries. It was probably more helpful than most career services/fairs at Harvard in introducing me to what it's really like to work in management, tech, diplomacy, entertainment, design, and other fields!

What I wish was different

The tutor-tutee matching system used by Ringle, where the company and the customer decide who one will be matched to, makes it a bit difficult to have returning students or work with several students over an extended period of time. I actually preferred it this way, since I was able to meet a lot of different students in a short period of time, but I can see how some tutors might wish for more continuity with their students, so that they could witness student progress for themselves.

Advice

The pay is better if you can set a pretty intentional schedule or if you can tutor steadily. I would definitely recommend that students who are facing some extra free time during a winter or summer break sign up and set aside a few hours in the mornings/evenings to tutoring lessons. The number of lessons (and pay) pile up quickly! Also do pay attention to student feedback/reviews after each lesson—alongside a feeling of validation whenever the reviews are positive, they can really provide information about pacing, content, and delivery that as a tutor it's always important to adjust or keep in mind!

Tutor

March 2021 • Belle Mead, NJ

What I liked

Ringle is the ideal job for any college student looking for an enjoyable way to earn some extra money. Being able to learn about so many different perspectives, personal stories, and cultures is a rare bonus within tutoring. What is unique about Ringle is that their lesson plans seamlessly weave in students' entertaining stories and opinions based on their culture and past experiences. Tutoring seems like a mundane job, but not when it comes to Ringle. Even better, its flexible structure to schedule lessons around your activities makes this opportunity more accessible. During periods of exams or even vacations, I can pause my tutor lessons and then resume when I see fit. This is what allows me to excel in academics, extracurriculars, and social activities while still making money!

What I wish was different

Advice

When opening up slots for students to schedule a lesson with you, make sure to plan ahead and around your important tasks such as exam periods! It is very easy to balance tutoring for Ringle and school.

Tutor

May 2021 • Newport, VT

What I liked

I love how accessible Ringle is for college students. By allowing you to entirely make your own schedule and providing all necessary lesson materials to you, Ringle makes tutoring easy and enjoyable. Getting to meet professionals from so many different backgrounds has been an experience unlike any other. I especially like when I get the chance to tutor children because they're some of the most exciting and rewarding lessons. Ringle is a great part time job opportunity for college students whether you're looking for a small or large commitment. Even if you're a little nervous about your tutoring skills, they provide lots of resources to make you feel comfortable and confident during lessons.

What I wish was different

Occasionally there will not be enough lesson material to write a feedback report if a student only shows up for part of a lesson so it would be nice if the feedback report could be more flexible for certain situations, but this is minor.

December 2020 • Manhasset, NY

What I liked

Ringle has been the perfect job for me as a busy college student. I love that I can make my own schedule and work as much or as little as I want. I also like that it is virtual so I can work wherever I want. In addition, the students that I've met have been wonderful, and I've been able to learn a lot about people and cultures from around the world. Finally, I like how easy the platform is to use. Truly, every college student should consider Ringle as a part-time job.

What I wish was different

I wish I could connect with other tutors on the platform, but that is minor.
