Riveredge Nature Center

Ornithology Research Intern

June - August 2022 • Saukville, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the hands-on opportunities to participate in research, including data collection, analysis, and report writing

What I wish was different

I wish housing had been provided by my internship

Advice

The analysis and report writing sections of research are best accomplished with some deliberate pace-setting, including benchmarking and setting small goals to accomplish parts of the very large whole.

Research intern

June 2019 • Newburg, WI

What I liked

I learned from other professionals in my field about important skills such as plant ID, surveying techniques, management practices. I was given a lot of independence and was able to conduct my own independent research asking with the tasks I was responsible for.

What I wish was different

I really liked my experience but if I was going to change anything, I think it would have been helpful to have another intern helping me in the project.

Advice

Since I was given a lot of independence, it was helpful to set my own goals and deadlines. I'd recommend writing down a list of monthly goals to achieve and periodically check your progress, especially with monitoring plants that have certain flowering/ senescing windows.
