Mechanical Engineering Intern
May - August 2019 • El Segundo, CA
What I liked
LA is a fun city, although El Segundo is pretty south of the city.
What I wish was different
I wish interns had legitimate work to do. I wasn't give any real projects and my manager was not helpful. Most interns aren't given any security clearance, so 80% of the projects are immediately inaccessible.
Advice
Don't intern here if you're ambitious and want to be challenged. It's a better place for job security and slow comfortable living.

Advice
Even though you are used to spending hours at school and then doing homework after, it's nothing like going to work for 8-10 hours a day. Prepare yourself for being away from home and busy the full day.

Post Grad Space Parts Management Intern
May - August 2019 • El Segundo, CA
What I liked
I loved learning so much about space electronics. I realized that even with my degree there's so much I don't know yet! My manager was very good and supported me in networking and learning as much as I could, even in other departments. And because it's a big company there's so many perks and resources to take advantage of on campus. The flex time schedule was also super convenient with my commute. As long as I put in 8 hours a day, I could come in as early/late as I wanted, within reason.
What I wish was different
Some other interns didn't have managers as awesome as mine and they felt like their time at the company wasn't worth much, or that they weren't contributing in any meaningful way. My own work was mostly organizing data with excel sheets, drafting documents in word, and a LOT of reading. Little to no engineering design work.
I wished that I didn't have to deal with the LA traffic to go 30 miles into work every day and night (~1 hour in the morning and ~1.5 hours at night), but it was worth it.
Advice
Get Involved! Take Advantage of all the Resources! Get to know a lot of people and ask them all the questions!
I didn't get this internship through BYU, it was actually through my grad program at CSU Fullerton. The electrical engineering department was invited to a career fair at Raytheon's campus, and while there I was given a verbal offer on the spot. I think they're looking to hire locals because there's a much higher chance of them sticking around after the internship to work full-time.
