Salt Lake County

Environmental Health Assistant

May 2022 • Millcreek, UT

What I liked

I loved learning about the other programs that Environmental Health Department oversees. I loved how friendly my coworkers are and how quickly I could get feedback from my supervisors.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more inclusion in other projects besides the one I was assigned.

Advice

Understand that working with a governmental organization, there is a lot of prep that goes into each program, and that changes happen slowly.

Communications and Diversity Intern

May - September 2021 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I loved the employees, fellow interns, and working for the mayor. There were many unique opportunities available to the interns, and I felt very supported. I was given chances to manage social media, draft speeches, and do many other communication related tasks. There was a good spirit that made me feel like I was in control while getting the chance to learn.

What I wish was different

I would have loved if the internship would have been full time rather than part time.

Advice

Come in with an open mind, especially when working in a political environment. A closed mind doesn't get you very far!

Youth Services Intern

May - August 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

This internship was so monumental for me. I am interested in pursuing a career in clinical psychology, and through Youth Services I was able to interact with youth clients in need or at risk. Getting that kind of one-on-one experience in a semi-clinical setting is very rare. Also, I had an amazing system of advisors and instructors during my time there. I learned a lot about law enforcement, the legal nuances of healthcare and more about what direction I want to head in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked there longer! I had such a great time, and it was the first real experience I had in a workplace that emulates the career path I'm interested in. I wish I had worked more days a week!

Advice

I would say that opportunities like this are a great way to dip your toes into the clinical field of psychology. It's hard to find undergraduate internships that actually involve you in client treatment, and I'm so very glad I gave it a try.

Library Intern

May - August 2018 • Draper, UT

What I liked

This internship offered valuable hands-on experience helping with the day-to-day operations of a local library. The management is amazing here, teaching me a lot and inspiring me to become a librarian.

What I wish was different

I only worked about 13 hours a week, and I would have loved to work 20 or even 40 hours at the library!

Advice

Be prepared to do anything. As an intern at a local library, you will be asked to do a variety of odd jobs, from cutting out stickers to shelving books to supervising an activity to cleaning out bottles for a program.
