Database Developer Intern

November 2019 • Scottsdale, AZ

What I liked

Best thing was the opportunity for growth by doing real work on real databases. I got to do the same work that salaried employees were doing. In addition to that, I was given an amazing mentor who helped to guide my learning and developer my skills. Overall, it was a great experience!

What I wish was different

The dress code here is business professional so you are wearing a suit or dress to work everyday. It's not a real complaint, but it would be nice to not have to pay for so much dry cleaning and to feel a little more comfortable while working.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and to speak up when you don't understand something.

What I liked

The pay was really nice and they had a lot of perks and benefits as a student

What I wish was different

The environment and dress code. The hiring process is long, training is hard and long.

Advice

There is a lot of learning and outside equipment knowledge that would be help to know prior to working.

The pay was fantastic, and I enjoyed the travel and every Wednesday when food was catered in.

What I wish was different

Software Developer Intern

February 2019 • Scottsdale, AZ

What I liked

We are all looking for great pay and Sandhills will deliver on that aspect of the internship as they seem to value (rightfully so in 2019) progression in information technology. Your hiring manager manages the team you will eventually join upon completing training where you will work on real projects that affect the business. Desks are setup in pairs without the inclusion of cubicles which encourages more frequent interaction among colleagues. Collaboration is strongly encouraged and your peers are always willing to give a helping hand, although I do recommend exhausting all other options (i.e. doing research yourself) before reaching out for help. Self-sufficiency is important and the company gives you every opportunity to show what you can bring to the table. If you have a passion for tech and are looking to great opportunity, Sandhills is a great place to inquire.

What I wish was different

The atmosphere should be a bit more relaxed for developers. The work environment is formal requiring everyone to wear a suit and a white dress shirt while women must wear skirts. I would opt for business casual requiring at the very least, a polo and jeans/slacks. The company owners seem to be living in a previous era, but I can respect the image they wish to portray to outsiders with whom they conduct business considering the industry they frequently interact in (heavy machinery).

Advice

You may be introduced to languages you haven't seen before so don't be overwhelmed. The company seems to be transitioning to more widely-used programming languages, but still keep an open-mind to learning what they use currently. Having an understanding of both the new and old will make integrating with the company much smoother and also increase what you know as an individual (knowledge is power). Reach out to your peers when you need assistance, we are all there to reach the same goal/help the same company, so interaction is necessary and crucial to anyones success at Sandhills.
