Summer of the Arts

Marketing Analytics Intern

January - September 2021 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I liked getting to use Google Ads and get to explore social media analytics. These have been great learning experiences and it helps me in job interviews for full-time jobs and makes me a more compelling candidate.

What I wish was different

Working the festivals was very taxing. Although they were great learning experiences for event management, it was still a lot of work and manual labor and had no compensation.

Advice

In my position, it was helpful for me to have a consistent schedule and complete my weekly to-do's on the same day every week. This made tracking analytics more accurate and reliable.

media intern

May - August 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

Working alongside other interns was enjoyable, as well as seeing how summer festivals operate. The bosses seemed invested in their work, and there was creative freedom in media that I made for SotA.

What I wish was different

Communication was difficult at times. The organization was going through a bit of a transitional period during my time there, and so some disorganization occurred. Lack of video and media resources made my job challenging at times.

Advice

The festivals can be quite demanding given the hours required—it is recommended that you have an interest in the background functions of festivals as well as whatever internship position you are applying for.

Multimedia Intern

January - August 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

The type of equipment I was given access too and the chance to learn new programs and software's that were used in making promotional material.

What I wish was different

The amount of hours we were required to work during festivals and the amount of labor required.

Advice

The hours you are required to do during festival days are very long. 7 in the morning to past midnight kind of long. Just be prepared for that.

Volunteer

May - August 2018 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I loved working with all of the people involved and getting to be more a part of the Iowa City community outside of the University.

What I wish was different

At times, things could be a little crazy, mostly due to other volunteers not showing up when they said that they would.

Advice

Summer of the Arts is a great place to internship or volunteer. There are a lot of interesting experiences to be had and interesting people to meet. The nonprofit runs smoothly, as far as I can tell, and they bring a lot of fun, joy, and education to the Iowa City area.
