The experience overall was awesome. I was able to meet knowledgeable and passionate PI and graduate students. They had busy schedules but always had time to provide useful knowledge both inside the lab and general knowledge about being a scientist.

I wish I knew how applicable and practical this research experience was so I can be more prepared.

Advice

Be passionate about the project the Principle Investigator provide and always provide your 100%. Understanding the background is vital to performing the experiment. Write down ALL information in your notebook including procedures and prevention methods. Careful about contamination.

Summer Research Intern

May - July 2021 • Winston-Salem, NC

What I liked

I really appreciated the fact that interns were placed in labs aligned with their research topic of interest.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more time in the lab, in addition to literature sent ahead of time to review or clearer prior communication about research timelines to help maximize the research experience's benefits.

Advice

I would recommend individually reaching out to the PI of the research lab beforehand, alongside post-docs that you will be working with, to both gain a grasp on the labs day to day function and ongoing research projects as well as gain a background on the research topic of interest so you can hit the ground running from day one.
