The work load.

Advice

Be prepared for people to not know as much as you and that others may not always do as you ask. You may need to keep people on the right track. So, being able to talk to people is very important. It's also very important to remain organized.

What I liked

Your boss and the others that you work for are great and acknowledge that you are still a student. The work isn't rigorous but you have the opportunity to pick up some extra tricks along the way.

What I wish was different

That we had the opportunity to do a little bit more and work on more actual projects rather than light office work.

Advice

It's a great job for a student because you get to meet and develop relationships with the people who run the school that you go to.

Student Assistant

September 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The people at the university are very friendly and easy to talk to about anything. When working as a student assistant, students are offered access to a little bit of how the university operates and how things keep moving on time. While working there you learn about resources that are offered to students that are covered by your tuition that can take advantage of and benefit from. There are people from very different backgrounds that you meet all the time that you would never meet anywhere else. They are willing to share their experiences to help you learn and grow while you work there.

What I wish was different

The workload is different depending on what team you are assigned to for the semester/year. So a student assistant when working with one team may learn about some things that another student assistant may not know about. There are things being done to reduce this that are now in effect, but I would like other possible student assistants to know about this.

Advice

When working as a student assistant, do not be shy to ask about time off for exams, midterms, finals that are coming up and are important to you. The staff is very flexible with scheduling time off or switching days you work to make sure you do well in your courses.

Super chill environment, flexible hours, always ways to get more hours therefore more money

What I wish was different

I wish we had more employees over summer to help split the work up some more

Advice

Definitely check out work-study jobs in general, they're much more chill than you think and they almost always start at higher than minimum wage for less work overall

Advice

I have obtained skills that will not only help with my current job, but I am able to take these skills into the field for my future career. Sometimes the jobs that you work while in school may not relate to your program, but you never know what skills you will learn that will open more doors for you in the future.

Research assistant

June - September 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I liked getting to better understand what the research process is like in chemistry labs. It was very interesting to have a real life experience with products that had therapeutic effects rather than working in labs in college that don't have real-life applications a lot of times.

What I wish was different

A lot of the time was spent waiting for reactions and other things to happen so there was a lot of down time which led to not many results. It is hard to only be in a lab for 10 weeks so I wish there would have been more time to gather more data and results. This would have helped in writing my SIP.

Advice

Don't be afraid to email different professors at different universities to see if they have room in their lab! I emailed the PI because I found his research interesting and he ended up having space for me.
