Bonus Counselor

May - July 2019 • Young Harris, GA

What I liked

I liked being able to work with kids and being active almost constantly. I liked the work environment and also my coworkers. I also enjoyed the atmosphere at camp. Everyone cultivated an atmosphere of openness and encouragement that flowed from the counselors and other staff and down to the kids we were serving in order to make camp the best experience possible and show God's love in all our actions.

What I wish was different

One thing I would change about my camp experience is how people treated their position sometimes. At times it was frustrating how all of us got used to doing our job and had trouble switching positions when we were called to help in a role we were not used to. This made working difficult occasionally because it is hard to switch into a role that is different than the everyday role we were used to.

Advice

To be encouraging and open to others. It is easy to complain about the hard things that happen day to day when working a job that starts at 7 AM and ends at 11 PM. Nevertheless, the hard work and perseverance I gained from this job will help me in future roles as I grow and move into new working environments.

Office Assistant

May - July 2019 • Young Harris, GA

What I liked

I loved the community and environment around the job. The job was Christ-centered and ministerial for both children and the staff. I made many friends from across the country.

What I wish was different

The rules were slightly strict as far as bed time and dress code went. Overall though, it was all beneficial because it forced me to rest and also set a wholesome example for the campers.

Advice

I would advise anyone to try it out for the summer. It was truly an incredible experience for me and so many others. It is challenging, but as with anything, I'd encourage you to maintain a positive attitude and just have fun with the job in spite of the inevitable challenges .

Summer Staff

May - August 2019 • Rome, GA

What I liked

WinShape Camps for Communities is an amazing experience for anyone who loves God and wants to travel! My favorite part of working camp (for two years now) is the friends that I make from my team. You're on a team of 28 people for an entire summer doing some pretty tough (but super fun) work, and you grow close to the people you're around. Camp culture is another world completely and WinShape does Camp Culture better than any camp I've ever experienced. It's a paid summer job and is run by amazing people.

What I wish was different

There were times when we didn't have all the supplies we needed to complete an unprecedented (never-before-seen) day camp experience, and I wish that hadn't happened. But our Home Office team was always in constant communication with my leadership team, and in-turn, my leadership team was always in constant communication with us. We knew they had our backs and they always tried extremely hard to make sure we had what we needed. Sometimes it fell threw, but we knew that they were working hard to get us what we needed!

Advice

If you're going into a job, whether it is a corporate position, a retail position, or something like a summer camp position, and you're working on a team, always treat everybody with respect, and work hard to make sure that your job is completed to the best of your ability, no matter how small or big. Teams are dynamic and it's important to lean on those with experience and knowledge, but also to build your own skills and strengths. However, if we choose not to treat others with respect and kindness, and choose to only half-way do our job, the team will never work out, no matter how skilled or experienced the members are. A team by definition is a group of people who know that what they do matters to the group's success. Know that what you do matters, and how you do it is even more important. Do your job, and treat others with respect.

Summer Staff

May - August 2019 • Rome, GA

What I liked

It was an absolutely incredible experience that I could not have gotten anywhere else. From a skills development standpoint, I learned how to work closely with a team, teach kids Biblical principles, act on stage, coach soccer, drive large box trucks, set up auditoriums, and many other things. From a character development standpoint, it was probably the most challenging 10 weeks of my life on many different levels. It was extremely intense and difficult but well worth it.

What I wish was different

I wish I were able to visit more states than Florida and Georgia. My team only visited those two states.

Advice

Prepare in advance as much as you can for camp. You will be sent a lot of details about camp before the summer begins, and it helps a lot to review that material.
