Zoo Knoxville

Red Panda/Program Animal Intern

June - August 2019 • Knoxville, TN

What I liked

The program I worked under was amazing, the staff were wonderful and the work was rewarding. I learned a lot about many different animal species and found a love in the zoological field.

What I wish was different

Wish it had been longer!

Advice

Make sure to talk with the individuals in your department, network and get to know as many people as you can. Take up the chance to volunteer after the internship!

Digital Media Intern

June - August 2019 • Knoxville, TN

What I liked

My supervisor, Amy, was very hands-on. She did an excellent job of reviewing my photography, telling me what was working and what wasn't, and helped give me tangible goals to work toward. She showed me the ins and outs of social media marketing and completely changed my perspective on what PR is. She gave me several opportunities to practice familiar skills and expand new ones. She was an inspiration to me and was very invested in helping me prepare for future employment. Plus, what's not to love about photographing animals?

What I wish was different

I would have liked the internship to be paid.

Advice

I would highly recommend Zoo Knoxville to anyone just getting started in social media management or wildlife and event photography. My advice would be to not be afraid to try new things, and don't be ashamed to do things over. The zoo is the perfect place to learn because there are new things every day, but it is somewhat predictable. For example, we went back to the bird shows several times because it was a forgiving environment and excellent practice in photographing a fast-paced setting with long lenses.
