What I liked

The freedom of making my own schedule and deciding who I want on my team. Being a teacher and a mentor is a lot of fun and very rewarding.

What I wish was different

The economy. That's not in my control, unfortunately, but I wish I would've been able to impact more people and have a bigger team.

Advice

Keep your options open. Even if you're unsure if it's something you want to do, keep the option open. Act as if you need to earn it.

District Operations Manager

April 2018 • Greenville, SC

What I liked

The culture is very family oriented among the staff. All of the managers put forth their time, effort, and energy to help the reps in anyway possible. Every builds a very strong connection, both on a personal and professional level.

What I wish was different

I wish there would’ve been more help. We had upto 70 representatives working at one time and we were short staffed to work with everyone the way we wanted to.

Advice

If you have an opportunity to work in a business environment where you are actually involved in the business (not just getting coffee and making copies), then I highly recommend continuing! I’ve learned so many transferable skills working with Vector! I know I wouldn’t have been able to learn them as quickly and efficiently as I did this summer!

The experience I gained as a manager. This was able to help me grow professional and personally and further develop problem solving and critical thinking skills when it comes to real-world application.

What I wish was different

I wish I would of have taken some time off because I did work 40-50+ hour weeks and I did not have time to go on any vacation.

Advice

Definitely the best experience I could have possibly received as a 18-19 year old. If you are looking to learn how to run an efficient business and how to properly manage people while making a high income, then this is the job for you!

Branch manager

May - August 2019 • LaSalle, IL

What I liked

I loved being able to run my own business for the summer. I got to sign my own lease, run my own interviews, run the trainings, and also coach the sales representatives. I had a positive impact on many people. I was able to grow them and myself professionally and personally throughout the summer. I also loved the experience because I want to own my own tattoo shop in the future. Although it had nothing to do with tattoos, I got to experience the running my own business portion. Doing this internship gave me more confidence in myself and my abilities in management and sales.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have saved up more capital on my end. The company gives us $6000 to open the branch and the rest is our own money. Although I had a very successful branch, I wish I would have saved more of my own money so that I could have done better.

Advice

I would say to step outside your comfort zone. This experience going into it scared me so much but that’s what helped me grow a lot. I would say try to find an internship or job that shares the same goals as you and wants to help you grow not only inside the business but outside the business as well.

Branch Manager

April 2019 • Madison, CT

What I liked

I was responsible for a branch office for a multi million dollar marketing company at 18 years old. Learned how to manage people younger and older than me with complicated schedules. Also was responsible for training, development, interviewing, and the day to day operations.

What I wish was different

I wish I wasn’t a perfectionist and able to delegate more

Advice

Your limited by what your friends think of you... don’t let them ruin your future

Branch Manager

April - August 2019 • Rome, GA

What I liked

I loved the fact that I could be my own boss and create something! I have been a sales rep for about 3 years now, so getting a chance to create and develop my own team is something no other organization could offer me at such a young age.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more time to see what could have developed long term.

Advice

Never give up. Sales is hard, but it is also super rewarding.

Sales Advisor/Representative

May 2019 • Waldorf, MD

What I liked

I really enjoyed the sales experience I gained and learned leadership qualities from my managers. I had great experience at District meetings and meeting with my team. I had the opportunity to build my network and reconnect with past people a few degrees of separation from my main network. I was also given the opportunity to join a leadership academy and learn and better my overall value for an employer and use all sorts of leadership styles in my everyday life. My schedule was also very flexible.

What I wish was different

Vector and Cutco have a long history with people, especially students, of being a scam or "pyramid scheme". It is hard working for a company and expressing my success with this kind of stigma surrounding the job and people that are in my network afraid that my presentation will scam their parents or something which in turn, I lost out on sales. I also wish our office's sales team had also been more motivated to try and get thousands in sales instead of just selling for a few weeks and then stop working.

Advice

If you want to be successful, you have to stick with the job and be consistent. You have to make the phone calls and learn to get out of your comfort zone to build up your network and keep selling to more and more people. The first few weeks might be tough, but you have to keep going and trying and success will come.

Senior Branch Manager

April - September 2019 • Hagerstown, MD

What I liked

I love the freedom to run my own small business where I had the opportunity to impact lives of people my age.

What I wish was different

Better prepared myself for challenges. Didn’t set up properly my circle of influence going into the summer.

Advice

This is hard but it will be the best experience you can get as a college student no matter the major.

Sales Representative

May 2018 • Burlington, NC

What I liked

I have been working as a Cutco sales representative for two summer now. I liked this internship because it increased my communication skills tremendously! You also can work from home and make your own hours. The pay is great because there’s a base pay and a commission salary. It’s a great work environment because it targets mainly high school and college students to become interns.

What I wish was different

I do wish the pay was more consistent. The commissions are great, but if you don’t sell anything you have to rely on base pay.

Advice

I would honestly advise any senior in high school or college student to try it for one summer. You learn a variety of life skills and it’s super fun as long as you put into it what you want to get out of it.

Independent Sales Representative

July - August 2019 • Carlsbad, CA

What I liked

Very leadership minded and fascinating atmosphere, much to learn and do. Gives a person some experience in sales and how an agent or sales representatives work. They teach you how to do anything provided that your willing to learn

What I wish was different

I didn't enjoy their company values, although they were good people. Their actions were inconsistent with the message they were giving and something aways didn't feel right. Peer pressure and pre-existing bias pushed me away from enjoying the job

Advice

It's difficult to be a sales person, there's so much to learn and it's a good place to start if you can't find a job. Although it's probably something to list in a resume and move on rather than as a long term career choice.

Sales Rep

June 2018 • Muncie, IN

What I liked

I was able to create my own schedule, so I could work as little or as much as I wanted to. The harder I worked, the more money I made as well. I have been given a lot of opportunities within this company already for next summer.

What I wish was different

Due to it being competitive, obviously I wanted to always be working. I wish I would have taken a little more time off and actually enjoyed my summer.

Advice

Be ready to sell the crap out of some kitchen cutlery. It’s a great product, and it sells itself. Stay focused and don’t lose sight of why you’re doing it. That really goes for any job!
