What I liked

It was a realistic idea of what it will be like in that position. Everyone was willing to push you to learn and grow.

What I wish was different

It was only 8 weeks long and wish I would have gotten more time to learn more!

Advice

Always dig deeper! Be hungry and motivated in everything you do!

Retail Associate

What I liked

For my specific store location, excellent management. Ability to remain flexible from summer to fall when your schedule has to be changed to accommodate school.

What I wish was different

The pay and the staffing. Often schedule beyond my "maximum hours" because we don't have enough employees.

Advice

It's retail, have low expectations.

General Merchandise Expert

June - August 2021 • Midlothian, VA

What I liked

I liked the people I worked with and the job I had to do. I knew I didn't want to be a cashier or anything in the front of the store so I was super happy just stocking shelves and working in the back stock rooms.

What I wish was different

I wish I had different hours because I worked 4:30-11 almost every single night. I could have just said something to the managers and asked for different hours, but I just put up with it.

Advice

Make friends with your coworkers because it makes the job more fun and the hours go by a lot faster. Also don't stress about knowing where everything is in the store right away because you will learn quickly and be able to answer customer's questions in no time.

General Merchandise

June - August 2021 • Allentown, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to unload the shipments of clothing each morning and fold them and make sure they ended up on the right racks to be pushed onto the floor.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been enough shipments of clothing each day to do that for all of my shift.

Advice

Target is a great place to work and the work is not hard. I've done harder jobs than this and made less than 15/hr so my advice is to work smarter, not harder.

Intern

June - July 2021 • Camarillo, CA

What I liked

I throughly enjoyed this internship. The current Executive Team Leads at the store readily welcomed me and a fellow intern, which made the experience that much better. I was able to learn various things about logistics and data that is important to run the store/departments successfully. Most importantly, I grew in my leadership. I was granted enough freedom to grow these skills and help leader the team members in the store. I learned how to not only motivate a team, but to encourage them and make them feel heard. Being there felt like Target cared about investing in my professional and personal growth.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time in this internship. It was a short, 8-week program. I learned so much in such a short amount of time, I wish I could have had a few more weeks for this opportunity.

Advice

You get out what you put into this internship. It is easy to coast by and step back. It's important to take initiative and really own your learning experience - that is how you will het the most out of this opportunity! Take advantage of having a mentor and ask any and every question you can think of.

HR

June - August 2021 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I enjoyed that my position was very flexible in terms of how everyday was different. Rather than being confined in an office doing paperwork and answering phones, I could also be on the sales floor at a cash register, or doing restock in the back.

What I wish was different

One thing that I did not anticipate when I was offered the position was the amount of janitorial work that was required including cleaning out fridges in the break room, vacuuming, sweeping, and even restocking and tidying bathrooms. While I don't mind cleaning, it was unexpected and sometimes frustrating. I do wish I had known these were part of my responsibilities before accepting the job offer.

Advice

When I applied, I was expecting that it would be very strict, however the work environment is very welcoming and almost like a family. I would encourage those who want to apply to come with an open mind and feel comfortable. There are a lot of different positions that Target offers so be sure to explore your options.

Fulfillment team member

September 2020 • Flowood, MS

What I liked

The job hours were consistent, and they offer good pay

What I wish was different

The leadership was terrible. Very few managers or "team leads" knew what they were doing. They have a quick turnover rate

Advice

Set your boundaries with your schedule on day one with HR. Come in on time, and don't close on Saturdays.

Store Management Intern

June 2022 • Leesburg, VA

What I liked

I love how supportive, kind, and caring the entire team is! Everyday I learn something new, and it's really rewarding to see my personal and professional growth compared to when I first started. I also like how much autonomy they give me to choose what it is I want to accomplish, where I want to spend time with for the day. Everyone is also really awesome with answering my questions and helping me with my tasks.

What I wish was different

I wish there were clearer plans and expectations for each day (or that those plans were communicated better). I also wish I got to spend more time side-by-side with the ETLs.

Advice

Try out different tasks and projects, and look at the big picture of why they're important to the store's success. Reach out to the team when you need help, and get to know the store's strengths and opportunities. Definitely spend time learning more about your team members, team leads, and executive team leads. Many have been in their roles for a long time so they are knowledgeable, and having good relationships with them will make the experience all the better.

What I liked

They treat their employees very well. They just instituted a tuition program and have good benefits for full-time employees.

What I wish was different

I’m not really sure there was anything that Target could have done to make my experience better. Most complaints I have would be customer related.

Advice

I would suggest making sure you have a good foundation of customer service skills before applying. Target is relatively selective.

April 2021 • Chambersburg, PA

What I liked

Flexible schedule for the most part, accepted most availability requests as long as weekends were flexible, very accepting of students, nice hourly rate

What I wish was different

Didn’t always give the hours people needed, sometimes 8hours or less a week. Management was dismissive, sometimes dismissive and rarely accepted time off requests.

Advice

Please be an advocate for yourself, do not let target take over your life. You can learn a lot from targets business model and style but know when to draw the line between work and life.

Store Executive Intern

June - August 2021 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed how each day was different and exciting.

What I wish was different

I feel that unless with your mentor, there was not alot of guidance and you were not exactly treated as an intern.

Advice

I would say that 70% of the role is being a team member and the other 30% is being an intern.

Guest Advocate

May - August 2021 • Apple Valley, MN

What I liked

The pay was certainly a big plus. The building was generally tidy and harbored an accepting environment for the customers.

What I wish was different

The staff wasn't particularly lenient to the idea that everyone has off days sometimes, and just can't find a way to enjoy being at work (or anywhere) that day. Forcing a smile on your face 24/7 is quite exhausting for someone like me who is naturally introverted, and no one seemed to get that. It was seclusive being someone who just couldn't emotionally handle pretending to be overly happy all the time. I realized too late that this was not the job for me.

Advice

Extroversion is key in the enjoyment of this job. If you are not extroverted, I highly recommend you reconsider your choices because depending on your proclivities, it can get tiresome very quickly.

What I liked

It was a good way of making money.

What I wish was different

I wish I could find something that made money related to my field.

Advice

Getting a summer job is necessary if you need to make money like I do in order to afford college. If you have the luxury, focus on something that can help your future career.
